SILVER KNIGHT INFORMATION MEETING May 28 and 29, 2014

W HAT ARE THE S ILVER K NIGHT A WARDS ? The Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards is one of the nation’s most highly regarded student awards programs. The purpose of the Silver Knight Awards program is to recognize outstanding students who have not only maintained good grades but have also unselfishly applied their special knowledge and talents to contribute significant service to their schools and communities. The program is open to high school seniors, with a minimum 3.2 GPA (unweighted).

S TUDENTS MAY BE NOMINATED IN 15 C ATEGORIES Art Athletics Business Digital and Interactive Media Drama English & Literature General Scholarship Journalism Mathematics Music & Dance Science Social Science Speech Vocational- Technical World Language

What did the 2014 Silver Knights Have in Common? 1. They started EARLY 2. They reacted to a need in the community /went beyond their school 3. They presented themselves well 4. They entered contests and competitions – and won! 5. AP Scholars/AP Scholars with distinction 6. Honor Societies and Organizations. 7. They were involved with district, state and national organizations. 8. They had a personal story and reason for their work 9. They showed passion, interest and initiative.

A BOUT YOUR P ROJECT …. Art: Sketches of babies in Miami Children’s Athletics: Collect School Supplies in Backpacks  sent to foreign country Business: Money Matters Digital: refurbished computers for migrant workers, basic computer skills Drama: renovate theatre, teach debate skills, international competitions, English: ran a afterschool tutoring program at church GS: refurbished computers for seniors, taught basic computer skills Journalism: worked for hotline for LGBT youth Mathematics: Bright Lights Music/Dance: perform for sick patients in hospitals/ volunteer for organization in haiti Science: Phoenix Project for at risk youth providing community service activities Social Science: abandoned and adopted, raises money and awareness for adoption and foster care Speech: track at risk youth from freshman to senior year, provide support and tutoring Vocational/Technical: free tutoring for ESOL Students World Language: raised $60,000 for art and music programs

F OR SENIORS W HAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO ? Apply to be a Mater Knight by NOVEMBER 1, 2013  applications are available on my website. An electronic copy must be ed to Mrs. Mitrani: A paper copy must be given in PERSON to Mrs. Llanes. Selection Committee will decided who will be Mater Knights and in What Category  you will know by Mid November November, December, January – complete online application and collect documents

F OR JUNIORS W HAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO ? Do Community Service! Have project complete by your senior year Document EVERYTHING! Speak to Mrs. Mitrani or Mrs. Llanes about your potential project! Keep your grades up: GPA matters! Be involved in as many clubs, competitions, activities, events and experiences as possible!!! Look over the online application so you have an idea of what to expect for next year. Watch the Silver Knight awards on TV or in person (May) Work towards increasing your accomplishments in the category you wish to apply for!
