I Am In Control of My Brain! Why do some people react to situations with anger and others do not? What are some harmful effects of anger? What are some other ways to deal with anger?

Why do some people react to situations with anger and others do not? Feeling ignored  Peer Pressure Stress

What are some harmful effects of acting out of anger? Bad Reputation Potential Legal Problems ISS/Alt School Tends to cause more problems than it solves

World of Unintended Consequences Scenario: “That guy really annoys me. He keeps bumping into me in the hallway. I’m not going to put up with that anymore. After school, I am going to make sure I bump into him at Boling Park. He is going down.” What might be some of the unexpected consequences of fighting with someone you don’t really know? He could have a weapon  He may have many, many friends. He may be a professional fighter. You do not know his limits. Is he willing to fight to the death?? He may have a medical issue and you would cause more harm than you intended..

World of Real Consequences Scenario: “That guy really annoys me. He keeps bumping into me in the hallway. I’m not going to put up with that anymore. After school, I am going to make sure I bump into him at Boling Park. He is going down.” What are some of the real consequences of fighting in school or on school property? Maximum: Expulsion from CHS. Minimum: 9 days Alternative School Arrest

What could you do? Scenario: “Anne keeps talking bad about me. She is spreading all sorts of lies. On top of that, Becki saw her with my boyfriend last Friday. She shouldn’t be talking to my boyfriend. If she doesn’t stop, I am going to make sure she never messes with me again.” What can you do? Is there another way to resolve this issue other than to fight? Wait.. Do not act out of anger.  Ignore her…be the bigger person. Talk to the boyfriend. He is the one that should care most about you. Tell someone. If someone is spreading lies, that is a form of bullying. Talk to her. It may be that someone else is responsible for the gossip.

What are some other ways to deal with anger?  Take a moment. Don’t react right away.  Try to see the situation from the other person’s perspective.  Don’t sweat the small stuff.  Use reason. Think about the consequences.  Take a moment. Don’t react right away.  Try to see the situation from the other person’s perspective.  Don’t sweat the small stuff.  Use reason. Think about the consequences.

Simmer Down!  People choose anger. We create our own emotional upsets by what we think, our attitudes, and our beliefs.  Time is important in giving the brain an opportunity to process the emotional triggers that cause anger.  Emotion – Thought – Reaction is better than Emotion – Reaction.  We often need time to “cool down” in order to make decisions we won’t regret. This sometimes takes a half-hour to a couple of days.

Anger can be a positive emotional force IF expressed constructively by: Expressing grievances so they can be addressed Remaining focused on problem solving Energizing social change Cesar Chavez Ghandi Rosa Parks
