Strategic Business Leadership Process & Workshops

Key Question Can you say that your personal and business life are in harmony… …and that you are on the path to achieving your goals?

Reality Check Many business owners find their personal life is not aligned with their business. Instead of working ON their business, they spend most of their time working IN their business.

Make Change Happen! There is a better alternative. It starts with you – the business owner. Leadership is about coping with and driving change

SBL Strategic Business Leadership ® Change your leadership style from implementing the ‘idea of the week’… …to a strategic approach that focuses on achieving your dreams rather than simply accomplishing tasks.

traditional strategic planning. With SBL, realistic, practical benefits come quickly, allowing you to: It’s not traditional strategic planning. The SBL Bike SBL aligns your personal & business life. Compare it to riding a bike… DESTINATION: Personal Vision of Success POWER: Company Vision of Success

5 SBL Elements for Greater Success

Element 1 : Personal & Company Vision

ELEMENT 1 : Personal & Company Vision  Written Personal Vision Statement Is your business running you or are you running your business?  Written Company Vision Statement Like a compass pointing your organization in a desired direction

Personal Vision Statement Owner’s Personal Vision includes:  Desired involvement in business  Time at office: weekly, vacation time  Who do you want to work with?  How much income distributed from business and equity level in business?  And other factors…

Company Vision Statement Company Vision should include:  What you want your company to look like 5 to 10 years into the future  What you want your company to be providing in the way of products and services?  Where do you want to be operating?

Element 2 A Look in the Company Mirror

SWOT  Strengths  Weaknesses  Opportunities  Threats What does your company look like now?

Let’s Start Changing Course #1 Reason for businesses under-performing: Lack of formal planning No Map No Guide No Direction No Map No Guide No Direction

Element 3 The Plan

SBL Plan Pyramid Strategies Action Plans Goal Critical Success Factor The Plan

Critical Success Factors (CSFs) The most important (critical) factors facing your business:  Which factors, if not satisfied, will prevent your company from achieving success?  Conceptual in nature  CSF example: Increase sales revenue  Identify the most important goal as your Driving Critical Success Factor

Goal to Achieve CSF  Path to achievement of CSF in a way that is: - Specific - Measureable  Each goal must be reasonably achievable within very specific timelines, e.g.: - 15% increase in annual rate of sales revenue by the end of the next year

Strategies to Achieve Goal  Plan of attack to achieve goal  Conceptual in nature  One to five depending upon number and capability of employees, e.g.: Update marketing material

Action Plans: Each action must be “SMART”  S – Specific  M – Measurable  A – Achievable  R – Responsible party  T – Time frame

Element 4 Making it Happen

ELEMENT 4 : Making it Happen Successful business leader’s mindset:  Think strategically rather than working on “the idea of the week”  Focus on building teams rather than trying to do everything yourself  Motivate those responsible to get timely results  Create a results-oriented culture You create the culture for change

Element 5 Turn the Wheel

Periodic Reviews  Review results monthly and modify Action Plans as needed  Meet with employees responsible for specific actions in the Plan  Meet with Operations Team  Add a new Plan as needed and replace each completed Plan

Monthly SBL Coaching Meeting with your TAB facilitator on a monthly basis helps to “Turn the Wheel”:  Holds you accountable to your Plan(s)  Helps with SBL decisions  Guides you through inevitable issues

SBL

What’s Involved?  An SBL workshop allows you to break away from the day-to-day of your business to focus on where you want to go and how you want to get there.  It involves well-designed pre-work, a structured agenda, a productive climate for communication and professional facilitation to get the most out of your team and your time.

SBL Sample Agenda DAY 1 AGENDADAY 2 AGENDA 08:30-08:45: Opening Comments 08:45-09:15: TABenos Exercise 09:15-10:00: Review DISC & PIAV 10:00-10:45: A Look in the Rear View Mirror 10:45-11:00: Break 11:00-12:00: Create Company Vision 12:00-01:00: Lunch 01:00-02:00: Review Vantage Reports 02:00-03:00: Create Company SWOT 03:00-03:15: Break 03:15-04:30: Create Critical Success Factors 04:30-05:30: Create Goals for each CSF 08:30-10:00: Establish or Revise Strategies for each Goal 10:00-10:15: Break 10:15-11:45: Develop SMART Action Plans for Each Strategy 11:45-12:00: Takeaways & Next Steps 12:00 Workshop End

Why It Works  Incorporates attendee Behavior Styles to optimize discussions  Utilizes proprietary Business Assessment tool to uncover priorities  Leverages TABenos to foster open, productive communication  Allows you to consider long-term vision and pressing priorities  Involves extended team committed to implementing plan  Professionally facilitated

“I think we’re the type of company we are because of the SBL process.” “If the workshops aren’t planned, you’re not going to get anything out of them.”  Each partner presents a goal and a plan to the group for feedback  Plans revised and each presents a final plan incorporating feedback  Progress reviewed by group every other week  Facilitated Quarterly offsets need for major revisions Case Study

SBL SBL More Than Pays For Itself  Increases bottom line benefits  Allocates more of your time to working on your business, not just in your business  Creates marketing differentiation and message  Develops a sales process to turn marketing leads into sales  Uses your TAB Board to come up with new ideas and processes that are relevant to improving your business right now

Take Control SBL helps business owners:  take control of their business  empower employees  seize new opportunities and  operate more strategically Using The Alternative Board’s SBL, you can fall in love with your business again.
