Welcome to our first Fifth Grade Community Partner Project

Goals: Partner with one or two other students in your class and get to know each other. Practice how to be a thoughtful, creative and respectful partner. Complete the project. Record your thinking in your science notebook. Share what your team worked on with the rest of the grade.

Partner Project #1 Discuss, plan, design, record and build a Popsicle stick Bridge!

Materials/Resources Popsicle sticks < = 150 sticks White glue Science Notebooks One computer per group (if available) Graph paper, pens, pencils, rulers Your creativity and perseverance

Procedure: research bridges tonight! Day 1: Meet with your team, –talk, share, make drawings and agree on a plan. Start building. Day 2: Continue building your bridge, everyone must help! Day 3: Keep building! Record your steps, observations, and questions. –Have fun.

Time Frame Teams will work together on Wednesday through Friday, 1pm to 2pm. Bridges will dry completely over the long weekend and teams will share their designs on Tuesday, September 2 nd at 10am.

Rules You may only use the supplies/resources listed and made available at school. You may only actively work on the bridge at school. You may not ask for help outside of your team and teacher.

Successful Project Requirements Your bridge has to be at least 1 foot long. It must stand on its own and span an opening of at least 8 inches wide. A Matchbook car must be able to be pushed across the road portion. Each team member must keep their own notebook with a minimum of three entries, one per day. (Homework is ok) Each member must help in each phase; discussion, planning, design and building.

Optional Strength Test During recess, next week, a teacher will help teams test the strength of their bridge using weights. Bridges may break under the pressure and all team members will have to agree to the testing. Enjoy, be creative, have fun!
