Optional Theme G Urban Environments

This topic has 4 sections… 1.Urban Populations 2.Urban Land Use 3.Urban Stress 4.The Sustainable City It is advisable to create a sub-folder for each section on your computer to help your organisation.

Section 1: Urban Populations The Spec overview will appear at the start of each new section.

Today’s lesson…

What is Urban?

Therefore, what is “urbanization”? a)When landscapes increasingly display characteristics of human land use. b)When previously untouched countryside is taken up by housing, transport, industry etc… c)When an increasing proportion of a regions population move to towns and cities. d)When the environmental quality of a location decreases substantially. e)When cities and towns expand outwards into the countryside.

Define urbanization… Each Topic has a list of key definitions. This is one of them. Make sure you are aware of the IB Definitions list for each Topic. Now define megacity…

Visit this web address: Use the table I have given you to outline the patterns of global urban growth. You should also be able to describe the pattern of change for the world’s megacities, and suggest reasons for their locations.

Why are urban areas growing in population? In other words, why does urbanization occur?

For next lesson… Use the ‘Megacities’ sheet I have ed to you to outline the reasons why some megacities’ populations are growing rapidly. Ensure that your notes are concise (bullet points are fine) and that they are relevant.
