Hydroelectric Power Soyoung Lee

What is hydroelectricity? Hydroelectricity is a important electricity that is generated by hydropower which is moving water.

How it works The water is behind the dam forming reservoir. Turbine is connected to the generator and it makes electricity as it spins. So the water spins through the turbine and make hydroelectricity.

How is it generated Electricity is formed when the rotor moves around the stator, so the magnetic field from the rotor creates an electrical charge inside the copper wire.

Steps of how hydroelectricity gets created Water from river comes and a lake is formed by building a large dam Water falls to the turbine blade Turbine is connected to the generator The electrical charge is created and changes to useful electricity

Hydroelectric advantages Water is free The hydro power is cheap to operate Water is an abundant source There are no bad chemical emission from making hydroelectric power

more advantages Fuel is not burned so there is less pollution The technology is reliable

Hydroelectric disadvantages Building dams can be harmful to environment it can cause flooding which can destroy plant and animal life. Hydroelectric power is expensive to build Dams can be also threat to cities that lie downstream from them.

Hydropower and the environment Hydropower does not pollute the water. However, hydropower facilities can give damage to environment because it changes the land use, homes, and natural habitats in the dam area.

Is hydroelectric power renewable Hydroelectric power is renewable The Sun provides the water by evaporation from the sea, and will keep doing it.

Transforms into different kinds for different uses Transformers in each town changes the power into different kinds of electricity for different uses for example for factories and some for homes. You can start using the power whenever u turn on the switch
