Abraham Lincoln The Sixteenth President of the United States of America “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” -Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln’s Early Life Born February 12, 1809 in a one room log cabin in Hodgenville, Hardin County, Kentucky. His parents were Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. Moved to Indiana at age 8. His mother died when he was ten years old. The family was very poor and lived in the wild woods of Indiana. Lincoln had very little formal education but loved to read and often borrowed books to read. 1818 Lincoln was kicked in the head by a horse and, for a short time, was thought to be dead!

Lincoln’s Middle Years August 4, 1884, Lincoln, age 24, is elected to the Illinois General Assembly as a member of the Whig party. Begins to study law. November 4, 1842 Lincoln marries Mary Todd in Springfield, Illinois. They had four boys, only one of whom lived to maturity.

Many Setbacks for Lincoln Mother died when he was 8 years old. Was very poor with little education. Three of his four sons died. He failed as a businessman - as a storekeeper. He failed as a farmer - he despised this work. He failed in his first attempt to obtain political office When elected to the legislature he failed when he sought the office of speaker. He failed in his first attempt to go to Congress. He failed when friends sought for him the nomination for the vice-presidency in 1856. November 6, 1860 Lincoln is elected 16th president of the United States.

Lincoln’s Accomplishments Lincoln was our country’s 16th president. He was president during the Civil War. He helped to bring peace to our country when it was stuck in a bitter battle over slavery. Wrote the Emancipation Proclamation. He is regarded as some to be our greatest president ever.

A Sad Conclusion On April 14, 1865, Lincoln and his wife Mary see the play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater. About 10:13 p.m., during the third act of the play, John Wilkes Booth assassinates President Lincoln. Ford’s Theater

13th Amendment Dec 6, 1865 – 8 months after Lincoln’s death, the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, is finally ratified. Slavery is abolished. Lincoln’s greatest cause was finally realized with the passing of the 13th Amendment.

Other Interesting Information Lincoln had a very sharp wit and knew how to fight with words and he is famous for his quotes. "Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in." Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.

My Favorite Lincoln quote… “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.”
