Nutrition Monitor Andrew Guthrie: Chun Yen: Rob Akbarian: Vicki Jones: Pouya Karimi:

Statement of Problem & Solution Obesity has steadily gone up in America, and childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. It is speculated that the primary cause for this is a decrease in overall exercise and an increase in energy intake Many people who try to lower their food intake have difficulties in accurately recording every item. To help people keep track of their diets, we of Nutrition Monitor have designed a website that stores the user's daily food intake and personal information. This information helps users to visualize their diets, and can then be used to create a personalized diet.

Approach to Solution Emphasis on visualization of nutritional history so that users get a more accurate understanding of their diet Use of interactive charts and tables allows users to more easily track their daily intake, as well as view long term trends. Autocomplete functions combined with USDA database allows users to quickly search for virtually any food items

Usability Test Method For usability testing, we came up with a list of tasks that users of the Nutrition Monitor system would need to perform. These tasks included registration, entering foods (from a small example database), and observing trends in data that we provided. Subjects were asked about their computer experience before the test. Afterwards, they gave brief critiques of the site, highlighting both positive and negative aspects.

Usability Test Result Users liked the idea of Nutrition Monitor. Most of their improvements were ways to expand the service, adding new functionality. Some of these suggestions, such as personalized recommendations and the ability to enter multiple foods at once, were added. Others have not been implemented yet, but were noted as possible future directions for the project.

Conclusion We think that this website does a good job of helping users to track their daily food intake. The interface of the site is very easy to use, and it has the full functionality we wanted. The site is also very interactive. Autocomplete functionality makes food entry easier, the chart is capable of showing any possible region when the user mouses over nodes showing that day's data, and a filter in the table enables rapid search of a particular day's summary.

Future Work With minor aesthetic adjustments, and a few hours of manual data entry to add in restaurant data, site could have potential to be a viable webpage. We would like to add an option to view all of the different nutritional components in the chart. This would be more useful than just calories, and was one of our original ideas. Finally, a mobile version of Nutrition Monitor would allow people to log their food intake on the go.
