Hospital Administration

It is the management of the hospital as a business. The administration is made up of medical and health services managers (sometimes called health care executives and health care administrators) and assistant administrators.

A hospital today is an institution for professional health care provided by physicians, nurses and other professionals.

Hospital Administration Administrations range in size and the duties of the administrator depends on the size of the administration.

Administrators Are liaisons between the hospital boards, other administrators and the medical staff. They coordinate the activities of and create policies for the hospital. Some administrators are in charge of hiring and training of doctors and other staff, then may perform evaluations of current employees and direct staff meetings.

Administrators They may also be responsible for the hospital's public relations and fund-raising programs. Administrators develop programs for teaching and research hospitals. They must be aware of new advances in medicine.

Types of Administrators Clinical managers, who manage specific departments and usually have experience in the area; Health information managers, who maintain and take care of patient records; and managers who are in charge of the hospital's business matters.

During the Middle Ages the hospital could serve other functions, such as almshouse for the poor, or hostel for pilgrims.

The name comes from Latin hospes (host), which is also the root for the English words hotel, hostel, and hospitality.

Outpatients Outpatients- Patients who just come for diagnosis and/or therapy and then leave. Inpatients Inpatients- Patients who are admitted and stay overnight or for several weeks or months. Hospitals are usually distinguished from other types of medical facilities by their ability to admit and care for inpatients.

Clinics A medical facility smaller than a hospital, & is often run by a government agency for health services or a private partnership of physicians (in nations where private practice is allowed). Clinics generally provide only outpatient services.

Other facilities Many hospitals have hospital volunteer programs where people (usually students and senior citizens) can volunteer and provide various ancillary services.

STAFFING Staffing means filling job positions with the right people at the right time. It involves determining staffing needs, writing job descriptions, recruiting and screening people to fill the positions.

LIABILITIES OF HOSPITAL In the most general sense, a liability is anything that is a hindrance, or puts individuals at disadvantage.

In law In law a legal liability is a term used to describe situations in w/c a person is liable, such in situations of tort concerning property or reputation and is therefore responsible to pay compensation for any damage incurred; liability may be civil or criminal.

HOSPITAL LIABILITIES Form of insurance covering Liability arising out of the provision or non- provision of hospital services so as to have an action brought against the hospital for malpractice, error, or mistake;

Medication errors: Most frequent hospital error 1. Wrong Dose, Wrong Medicine, Wrong Patient, Wrong operation site, Wrong Time 2. Patient condition (Allergy or Genetic) 3. Drug/Drug Interaction 4. Over medication

Hospital Reaction to a “Never Event” Apologize to patient and family Report to Joint Commission or other safety org. Perform a root cause analysis Waive all costs directly related to the error

Conclusion The current quality of patient care in some hospitals is far below what it should be and what it can be Working together, hospital administrators & medical staffs can reduce the present needless patient injury due to medical error and can give the safe care which people rightly expect to receive when they entrust us with their health and their lives.

Health Reform Is not just about increased access to any health care, it is about access to SAFE health care in our hospitals.
