AGENCY PURPOSES AND TYPES n Services range from simple to complex. n Purposes of agencies –Health promotion n Physical and mental health are included. n The goal is to reduce the risk of illness. n teaching and counseling about healthy living. n signs and symptoms of illness are learned. n learn how to manage and cope with their diseases
Purposes of agencies- continued n Disease prevention –Risk factors and early warning signs of disease are identified. –Measures are taken to reduce risk factors and prevent disease. – lifestyle changes can prevent health problems. n examples –Diet and exercise can help lower blood pressure. –Immunizations prevent some infectious diseases
Purposes of agencies- continued n Detection and treatment of disease –Diagnostic tests, physical examinations, surgery, emergency care, and drugs – Respiratory, physical, and occupational therapies – observing signs and symptoms, giving care, and carrying out doctor’s orders

Types of Agencies n Nursing assistants work in many settings. –Hospitals –Rehabilitation and subacute care agencies –Assisted living facilities –Long-term care centers –Mental health centers –Home care agencies – Hospices –Health care systems

ORGANIZATION -An agency has a governing body called the board of trustees which makes policies following local, state, and federal standard -An administrator manages the agency -Directors or department heads manage certain areas
ORGANIZATION n The health team (the interdisciplinary health care team) – involves staff members who work together to provide health care. –The team’s skills and knowledge focus on the person’s total care. –The goal is to provide quality care. –The person is the focus of care.
ORGANIZATION n Nursing service –a large department. –The director of nursing (DON) is an RN. –Vice president of nursing and vice president of patient services are other titles. –The DON is responsible for the entire nursing staff and the care given.
ORGANIZATION- Nursing Service n Nurse managers (RNs) n -assist the DON. n -responsible for A work shift or nursing area and all nursing care and the actions of nursing staff in their areas
ORGANIZATION- Nursing Service n Nursing education staff: –Plan and present educational programs –Provide the nursing team with new and changing information –Instruct the nursing team on the use of new equipment – Educate and train nursing assistants –Conduct new employee orientation programs
Organization-THE NURSING TEAM n THE NURSING TEAM –involves the individuals who provide nursing care (RNs, LPNs/LVNs, and nursing assistants). –Each member of the team has different roles and responsibilities. – All members are concerned with the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of the person and family.
Organization-THE NURSING TEAM n Registered nurses (RNs): n - RNs completed a 2-, 3-, or 4-year nursing program and passed a licensing test. n a. Community college programs n b. Hospital-based diploma programs n c. College or university programs n - RNs must have a license that is recognized by the state in which they work.
Registered Nurses n -RNs may delegate the orders to LPNs/LVNs or nursing assistants n -RN job options depend on education, abilities, and experience. n -report to the nurse manager.
LPN n Licensed practical nurses and licensed vocational nurses (LPNs and LVNs) n LVN’s only in certain states n LPNs/LVNs:Are supervised by RNs, licensed doctors, and licensed dentists n -Have fewer responsibilities and functions than RNs n - Have less education than RNs
Nursing Assistants n Nursing assistants n give basic nursing care under the supervision of an RN or LPN/LVN. n -title depends on the setting, roles, and functions.
