Needs Assessment The needs assessment identifies a gap in knowledge, skill, and or practice.

A Needs Assessment is: A systematic process of gathering information that is appropriate and sufficient to develop an effective educational program that will address the groups’ needs and wants (gap). Methods that are frequently used for determining a needs assessment include the following: –Membership Learning Needs Survey –Patient Care Requirements –Request from Sample of Potential Audience (focus groups) –Changes in Legislation or reimbursement –Review of current professional literature –Evaluation from prior learning activity –Recent trends in patient population –Annual event –Others including: QI data, Morbidity and Mortality data, new methods of diagnosis or treatment, new technologies.

Gap Analysis The gap analysis is then used to determine the best educational methods to “fill the gap” in knowledge, practice or skills.

Getting from Now to Future Practice What the Nurse Does Now What the Nurse should do as best practice

Current State & example What the Nurse Does Now is the current state Examples: –Possibly nurses are not washing their hands between patient assessments. –Possibly nurses are not aware of the changes in procedure that have occurred. –Possibly a new research study shows that raising the HOB 45 degrees decreases VAP, but nurses are not raising the HOB in ICU

Desired State & Examples What we want the nurse to do is the desired state. Examples: –Have the nurse wash their hands before and after every patient assessment –Have nurses implement the new procedure –Have nurses raise the HOB to a 45 degree angle to decrease the rate of VAP in ICU

Education Design Process Step 1: Perform a Needs Assessment Step 2: Determine the Educational Gaps in knowledge, skills or practice: What is the best practice? Step 3: Determine Purpose of the Activity & Program objectives and Design Step 3: Determine Purpose of the Activity & Program objectives and Design Step 4: Course Development Step 5: Implement the Activity Step 6: Evaluate the Activity
