Liz Hill Okay - here is my experience as a teacher. This is my fourth year in deaf education...I taught one year as a 2nd grade teacher and have spent the last 3 years as a reading recovery teacher/reading specialist. The best part of the job is seeing the students make achievements, even if they are small. I have my master's in deaf education and am working on my reading specialist certification. Through my short career, I have learned (and been shown) how to make all interactions as meaningful as possible for students by providing authentic materials and experiences. Many of the children I work with have parents who do not sign very much - due to this fact, providing language early and often is critical. There is a movement with the general education system to increase "oral" language (in our case we mean expressive language) in children to help boost their abilities. Our work day starts at 8. Average salary - really depends on a lot of factors - years experience, how much school but a new teacher with a masters can typically start around 38,000 - experienced teachers can make up to 80,000 with 20+ years of experience. We are comparable to public school teachers' salaries for the most part.

Liz Hill What made me want to pursue? - I had wanted to be a teacher since 7th grade...once I did a project and found out the money they made I was less inclined until I got the chance to be an aide at a deaf school in college...from then I knew that was what I wanted to do...the deaf aspect of things has always intrigued me and I love the language so from there it was easy. Academic challenge - I have one student who is deaf and has cerebral palsy - she is a very smart little girl and only about a year to a year and a half behind in reading (in deaf education that is not bad) - the academic challenge has been finding materials for her that she can manipulate herself so she is independent. I have worked with her for four years now and seen tremendous growth...this has not been a challenge in the negative sense, but in the tricky sense because most of the technology for children with CP rely on them being able to hear and/or speak. There has been a lot of creativity used over the years.
