What is the Job Market? The job market refers to the job openings that are available when you are ready to go to work. What is meant by skill set? Skill set is the unique combination of hard and soft skills each person brings to the job. What are hard skills? Specific technical abilities which are measurable physical and mental abilities that allow you to complete a job. Ex. What are soft skills? Nontechnical skills needed by most workers for success on the job. What are some skills you plan to have in your skill set? What kind of skill is being Microsoft certified in Word and Excel?

Job Choices Affect Your Income Generally – the more your skill set is filled with experience, training, and education, the more you can expect to earn. Most popular careers often require a bachelor’s degree or more. The number of jobs in a career area can also affect the income level of those working in the field. What is a Job Description? A job description tells you what is required in the job, skills required, and what tasks you must be able to do.

Lifelong Learner Learning new skills and information to help you stay qualified for a job is important for your job security. You will need to update your job skills. Lifelong learning will help you stay employed and able to earn higher pay and promotions.

Values and Goals – What is the difference? A value is a principle that reflects the worth you place on an idea or action. A goal is a desired outcome based on one’s values for which a plan of action is carried out. If a person’s values lead to their goals, then their career choices will naturally follow. For example if you value helping others, you may choose a caring profession.

What is the difference between formal education and informal education? Formal education involves classroom instruction and possible earning a degree. Informal education often occurs at the job. On the job training – learning as you do the work. Self-training – learning new skills from reading and practicing on your own. What are some examples of careers that require a formal education? An informal education?

How Does Education Affect Your Income?

In Summary Making choices about education is a serious responsibility. Education is considered an investment in you future. The jobs you choose and the education you receive will affect the amount of money you ae able to earn.

Assignments Due Thursday (tomorrow): Answer questions 1-19 on pg. 9. Due Tuesday (Jan. 13): Go to www.bls.gov/OCO/ and print information about three careers. On one of those careers write a short report (less than 1 page) on the types of information found (job title, nature of the work, work environment, training and skills required, and job prospects.
