Resistance in the Philippines Mr. Chojnacki US History II

White Man’s Burden Philippines had been fighting against Spanish rule for decades They helped U.S. destroy Spanish Army and Navy during War Filipino's assumed U.S. would grant them freedom like in Cuba –McKinley chose not to

Emilio Aguinaldo Helped Dewey defeat Spain in the Philippines –Won everything except Manila –Handed over 15,000 Spanish troops to U.S. for interrogation 1899 he was voted President of the Philippines and wrote a Constitution

American Response Instead of helping their efforts at freedom and democracy, U.S. disbanded the government –Felt they weren’t smart enough to govern Dewey claimed he never promised Aguinaldo anything for his troops help

Philippine War Filipino people had unknowingly traded one Imperial Power (Spain) for another (USA) McKinley worried that Aguinaldo would lead a revolt against U.S. power –Sent in thousands of U.S. troops to prevent problems

Start of the War U.S. troops opened fire on a Filipino Army convoy going into Manila –McKinley called it an attempted invasion by “Insurgents” Claimed Aguinaldo (who was democratically elected by his people) an “Outlaw Bandit”

U.S. never formally declared war because we didn’t recognize the Philippines government –Did send in 126,000 troops to suppress the “insurgents” Philippines held out hoping McKinley would lose election in 1900 When he didn’t they turned to Guerilla Warfare

American Atrocities Guerilla Tactics angered U.S. troops In response U.S. troops burned villages, threw people in concentration camps, and execute surrendering troops Between 500,000 and 1 Million Filipinos were killed –4,500 U.S. troops

U.S. troops told to “shoot everything over the age of Ten.” Reports of atrocities made American public question the war By that time however, Aguinaldo had been captured and the Filipino Army was crushed

Legacy of the War William Howard Taft took over the islands in 1902 Helped rebuild the economy and transportation systems Islands continued under U.S. rule until after WWII when they were granted Independence
