InfraCal Biodiesel Blend Analyzer Biodiesel in Diesel Calibration

Calibration Standards Calibration Standards are available from Wilks Enterprise

Calibration Standards Or you can make your own

Calibration Standards Biodiesel – choose the most common feedstock Diesel -- use the local diesel

Mix at least 5 standards within the expected measurement range. Mix at least 5 standards within the expected measurement range. A maximum of 20 calibration points can be entered in the calibration table A maximum of 20 calibration points can be entered in the calibration table Calibration Standards

Allow InfraCal Analyzer to warm up Allow InfraCal Analyzer to warm up for at least 1 hour before calibration for at least 1 hour before calibration Make sure crystal on the sample Make sure crystal on the sample plate is clean plate is clean Calibration with Prepared Standards

Cleaning the Crystal on the Sample Plate Add enough hexane or appropriate solvent to cover crystal Wipe slowly across the crystal in one direction, wiping back and forth tends to spread residual fuel Repeat cleaning to insure previous fuel is off Repeat cleaning to insure previous fuel is off

Zeroing Press and hold the ZERO button until the display reads bAL. Press and hold the ZERO button until the display reads bAL. Recall ZERO CAL RUN bAL

A multiplier value to 3 decimal places will be displayed when zero is established. The actual value is only of interest when reporting problems to the factoryA multiplier value to 3 decimal places will be displayed when zero is established. The actual value is only of interest when reporting problems to the factory Recall ZERO CAL RUN Zeroing

Press RUN. The display should read If not, repeat the zero processPress RUN. The display should read If not, repeat the zero process Recall ZERO CAL RUN 0.0 Zeroing Note: The result should be zero within +/- 0.2 after calibration and between +/-2.0 prior to calibration.

Run each standard at least 3 times starting with the zero standard (100% diesel)- cleaning between each sample Average results for each standard Enter results in a calibration table in column “A” and the corresponding calibration value in column “C” (see next slide) Calibration with Prepared Standards

Since the InfraCal does not allow a concentration of zero to be entered into the calibration table, the first concentration point must be calculated at 0.1%. See next slide for calculation…

To do this, use the following equation:A01=((A02-A00)/C02)*0.1+A00 A01 is the calculated relative absorbance value to enter into the instrument for C01= 0.1A01 is the calculated relative absorbance value to enter into the instrument for C01= 0.1 A00 is the relative absorbance of the 0% biodiesel (pure diesel) standardA00 is the relative absorbance of the 0% biodiesel (pure diesel) standard A02 is the relative absorbance of the second biodiesel standard (5% standard with standards from Wilks)A02 is the relative absorbance of the second biodiesel standard (5% standard with standards from Wilks) C02 is the concentration of the second biodiesel standard (5.0 with standards from Wilks)C02 is the concentration of the second biodiesel standard (5.0 with standards from Wilks)

Note: This calculation is done automatically in the Excel file that can be found on the CD included with the instrument. Contact: if you would like that file ed to you
