Facebook in the Workplace: Booz Allen Hamilton Belcamp, Maryland

Facebook’s Mission To give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them (Facebook, 2014).

Statistics  100% of the survey group have a personal Facebook.  100% of the survey group check Facebook at least 3x a day.  100% of the survey group chose Facebook as their favorite social media site.  50% prefer Facebook updates over the news, telephone, or .  60% believe Facebook can be used in the workplace as a form of communication. A small portion of participants were chosen at random for the survey

Purpose of Facebook  Communication across the firm throughout the nation  Announcements  Event Planning  Education/Training Notices  Direct Messaging  Calendar  Collaboration across the firm throughout the nation  Discussions  Q & A sessions  Staff Support

Technology Initiative Committee  Composed of 4 staff members – Consultant → Senior Consultant  Meetings:  The committee discussed the implementation of the consulting firm’s technology initiative and how social media could be used as a positive form of communication in the workplace.  The committee discussed the funding of the firm’s Facebook site and what training would need to be implemented in order to make the social media site successful.

Benefits to Using Facebook in the Workplace “Workers who communicate easily, accurately, and quickly have the best chance at being productive and effective.” (Joyce, 2012) “People use social networks in different ways. These are the people sharing content and engaging with others; they see their time spent on social networks as an investment.” (Press, 2013) “While it varies from organization to organization, we have seen instances where as much as 60 percent or more of network resources are being consumed with things like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.” (Lis, 2013)
