Welcome to Meet the Teacher Night! Mrs. Ostertag’s Grade 3 Class

All About Mrs. Ostertag  My background  I grew up on a farm near Leoville.  Attended a K-12 school  My education and experience  Bachelor of Education from the University of Saskatchewan  10 th year teaching  Personal  Married with two children and a cat named Chewie

I PICK Good Fit Books  I look at the book  Purpose – Why do I want to read it?  Interest – Does it interest me?  Comprehend – Am I understanding what I am reading?  Know – I know most of the words.

The Daily Five Literacy Work Stations  Independent Work Station Activities  Read to Self  Whisper Phones  Reading Comprehension  Work on Writing  Read to Someone  Word Work  Literacy Folders  Listen to Reading  Tapes/CD’s  Computers  Intervention Groups or CAFÉ Groups meet during this time

Word Work  Word Work Activities may be:  Spelling Activities  Phonics Activities  Grammar Activities  Cursive Handwriting  Words Their Way Spelling Program  Each weeks spelling words will be written in their communication books.  Weekly spelling lists and activities can be found under A. Ostertag at Spellingcity.com.

Tests  Spelling tests will be every Thursday  Before most tests, there will be a study guide sent home  Study guides also available on the classroom website  Students are given time in class to work on the study guide (if needed).  We will go over the completed study guides together  Study guides will come home about two days before a test  CTCS tests in March

Our Classroom Community  Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with one another.  Our class rules are:  Respect Others  Be Polite and Helpful  Keep the Room Clean  Be safe  Be the best student that you can be.

Choices and Rewards  Positive Rewards  Paper chain  Reading sticker chart  Notes sent home  Praise  Marble rewards  Clean desk treats  Our Choices  Warnings (eye contact, proximity, use of child’s name or verbal)  Names on the board and checkmarks  Notes, s, or phone calls home  A conference with Mr. Werbicki

Homework  Daily homework will consist of:  15 minutes of reading – students write the name of the book read and parents initial the entry  Homework Policy  A note will be in the communication book to notify parents of incomplete work.  The work is completed during class time, at recess, or at home.  Absent Student  Work can be sent home with a sibling or picked up at school. Please request the homework before noon.
