2 Meet Mrs. Perry My Background - Grew up in Houston, Texas - Moved to Colorado in 1998 My Education - B.S. in Early Childhood Education (PK-3) - Starting my Masters of Arts program/certification in Integrating Technology in the Classroom My Experience - 17 th year of teaching overall - 2nd year teaching at WRE - Experience with grades pre-k, K, 1, 2, and reading intervention

3 My Goals To work with you, the parent(s), as a partner in educating your child To facilitate learning for all students in exciting and fun ways To help each child experience academic growth and success To equip students with the skills needed to become independent and lifelong learners

Class newsletters can be found on school website School Handbook (Student/Parent Handbook) is on the website, read and sign off electronically The SBRC K-5 Parents’ Guide is available for parents to view on the district website (www.asd20.org). Click on “Parents/Students” and the SBRC K-5 Parents' Guide 2013- 2014 is found under “Parent Quick Links.”www.asd20.org Parking lot chart for questions Weekly newsletters with information on academics, important dates, and homework for the week will be on our website. Take home folders: homework, Scholastic book orders, and student work, field trip permission slips, etc.

5 Woodmen Roberts Roar Pride Card ROAR BEHAVIOR R - Respect O - On task A - Attitude in Check R – Responsibility Students will be recognized with a punch on their Wildcat Roar Pride card when they are displaying Roar behaviors. Students may receive a Refocus/Think sheet if they are not following the Roar Behavior. This will be sent home, should be signed by a parent or guardian, and returned to the teacher the next day. »Color Coded Behavior Chart »Team Points

7 Volunteers and Class Parties Sign up sheet to volunteer to play the Phonics Game with students. Once a week for an hour. Details to come. In order to volunteer on a field trip, you must complete a background check first! Class Parties: If you would like to participate, please sign up for ONE party. Participating includes either bringing snacks, drinks, planning activities/games, pictures for yearbook, setting-up, or cleaning-up. You can either be a party coordinator or a helper. There will be only one party coordinator per party. There is a permission slip on each desk. By signing this permission slip, you give me permission to share your email address for coordinating a class party and/or field trip volunteers.

9 SBRC Standards Based Report Cards- child’s performance is measured against the standards (CAS and CC) The Watch Me Grow (SBRC) binder will go home periodically and sent back to school. This allows communication on your child’s growth and progress towards the grade level standards. Your child will be graphing his/her progress on timed math facts, DLI assessments, reading fluency, etc.

10 Curriculum Math- Go Math Reading- small group instruction Literacy Stations: Independent and/or buddy work time to practice skills that have been taught. Stations include but not limited to: skill work, comprehension, exploration, writing (includes publishing), independent reading time, listening to a book read aloud on tape, computers, and buddy reading with discussion questions. It includes meaningful tasks that reinforce and challenge student learning. Spelling- Primary Spelling with Patterns Writing- they learn to write narratives, expository, opinions, and poems

11 Literacy Instruction Consists of whole, small, and individual grouping/work time. Literacy Stations: Independent and/or buddy work time to practice skills that have been taught. Stations include but not limited to: skill work, comprehension, exploration, writing (includes publishing), independent reading time, listening to a book read aloud on tape, computers, and buddy reading with discussion questions. It includes meaningful tasks that reinforce and challenge student learning. Small group direct reading instruction for all students based on needs during the Literacy station time.

12 Spelling In spelling, we will work with words to find patterns and ways to help us use correct spelling in all of our daily writing. Correct spelling of high frequency words is expected. The use of our class Word Wall is encouraged to help with this. We will learn and use many spelling patterns through poetry.

13 What is inquiry? What does it look like and what does it sound like? Students exploring a topic, idea, concept, etc. Students question, hypothesize, examine, evaluate, reflect, etc. Student-focused with teacher guidance. Collaboration with peers is essential! Students learn by discussing with their peers, teaching their peers, and listening to their peers. Group and buddy work. (Explore different points of view, examine different ways to solve a problem, learn how to work together cooperatively.)

16 Homework Homework will come home every day except for Fridays. We will have 2 days of language arts and two days of math. Your child should be able to complete all homework independently. A weekly reading log of 100 minutes will come home on Monday and be due the first day of school the next week. Your child can always read more than 100 minutes a week. If your child consistently needs help or if homework takes more than 30 minutes please let me know and we can work together on a solution.

17 Thursday and Friday of next week your children will come for ½ a day for literacy testing. DIBELS, DRA2, Fry’s sight words automaticity. For our math program they will take online assessments. They will show their thinking on paper. Scantron will be administered 3 times a year. This is a reading test. Lexia Reading is a technology-based reading program that increases reading proficiency for all students pre-k–grade 4 and at-risk students grades 4–12 Testing
