Why is it important that we can identify fractions on a number line? IMP What are other reasons why it is important we can identify fractions on a number line?  Number lines in math are like graphic organizers in writing, they help us organize our information.  Being able to represent fractions on a number line helps visualize, or see, the answer to a problem.  Number lines help us compare and order numbers.

✤ When we compare we use terms such as: ✤ Less than < ✤ Greater than > ✤ Equal to = ✤ Comparing fractions is similar to comparing whole numbers. ✤ 45<47 ✤ 150>105 ✤ When we compare fractions we look at the denominators first, if they are the same we look at the numerator. Comparing and Ordering Numbers

10 01 Identifying fractions on a number line. Step 1: Determine the value for each segment on a number line. The denominator represents the total number of segments between whole numbers. Step 2: Beginning at the appropriate whole number, count the number of segments between the whole number and the point you are trying to identify. Step 3: Write the value of the point as a fraction. Remember the denominator represents the total number of segments, the numerator represents the number of segments you are using. Step 4: Reduce the fraction if possible. CD Identify point A on this number line. A 8 out of ten segments A = =

Identifying fractions on a number line. CD Identify point B on this number line. B 4 out of ten segments B = Step 1: Determine the value for each segment on a number line.

Guided Practice This is your Guided Practice. We will work on this together. Please do NOT go ahead. If you have questions this is the time to ask. PLEASE ask questions.

Let’s review what we learned about identifying fractions on a number line. A picture of a line where each point represents a real number and each number a point. Determine the value of each segment and then count the number of segments being used. How do you locate a point on a number line? What is a number line? On your dry erase boards, draw a number line and label

Independent Practice This your Independent Practice. You must complete all of the problems without assistance. You must SHOW ALL your work. Take your time. Work slowly and carefully. When you finish you flip your paper over and you made read quietly until everyone is done. Good Luck.
