1 Build and write fractions greater than one whole using unit fractions.
MODULE 5 LESSON 9 Build and write fractions greater than one whole using unit fractions.

2 End Multiply by 8s Sprint 2 minutes
This ‘sand timer’ will start on a mouse click anywhere on the slide. The ‘sand’ will drain from the top section to the lower section and when completed will show the word ‘End’. To change the timings of this timer, you need to enter the animation settings, and change the timings for the Isosceles Triangles. There will be 2 that need changing (to the same amount) – one animates the top triangle emptying, whilst the other animates the bottom triangle filling. When you change the timings these have to entered as a number of seconds. End

3 Find the Unknown Part 3/3 1/3 ? 2/3

4 Find the Unknown Part 6/6 5/6 ? 1/6

5 Find the Unknown Part 8/8 5/8 ? 3/8

6 Find the Unknown Part 12/12 5/12 ? 7/12

7 Problem of the Day Julianne’s friendship bracelet has 8 beads. When it broke, the beads fell off. She could only find one bead. To fix her bracelet, what fraction of the beads does she need to buy? 7/8 Julianne needs 7/8 of the beads to repair her necklace.

8 Concept Development I bought two oranges for lunch today. I cut them both into fourths to eat. Draw a picture on your white board to show how I cut my two oranges.

9 Concept Development FOUR Fourths
If one orange is one whole, how many copies of ¼ are in one whole? FOUR What is our unit? Fourths

10 Concept Development How many copies of 1 fourth (1/4) are in two whole oranges? Yes! The unit is still fourths. One orange is one whole … not two oranges. So I had TWO whole units for a total of 8/4! 8 Count them with me … Are you sure my unit is still fourths?

11 How much of an orange did I eat for lunch?
Concept Development How much of an orange did I eat for lunch? Now I got hungry and ate one whole orange and 1 piece of the second orange. How many pieces did I eat? 5 pieces 5/4 What is our unit? fourths

12 5/4 Concept Development 1/4 1/4 1/4 1/4 1/4
Draw a number bond showing the number of fourths I ate. Show a bond for EACH unit fraction. 5/4 1/4 1/4 1/4 1/4 1/4

13 Concept Development If you compare the number of pieces I ate to one whole orange. What do you notice? 5/4 So today we learned that … When the NUMERATOR (or top number) in a fraction is larger than the DENOMINATOR (or bottom number) we have more than one whole. The number of parts is greater than the number of equal parts in a whole. I ate more than one whole orange!

14 5/4 Concept Development 4/4 1/4
Now draw a new number bond with two parts. One part should show the pieces that make up the whole. The second part should show the pieces that are more than the whole. 5/4 4/4 1/4
