Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc. 3 Try this!! Tell how many parts are coloured? Well done!!

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc. 4 Exploring fractions Lets look at circle 1 and circle 2. In circle 2, lets draw a line dividing it in half. There are two equal parts. In circle 3, one part of the circle is shaded. We write 1 in which top number represents the 2 shaded part and bottom number represents equal parts in all. 1 23 1/2

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc. 5 Exploring fractions There are three equal parts in the above picture. 1 part is orange out of three parts. So, we write 1 in fractions. 3 The top number of a fraction can tell how many parts are shaded. The bottom number tells how many equal parts.

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc. 6 Exploring fractions Example There are two equal parts of the square. One part is coloured. What part of the square is coloured? ( 1/2). What part of the square is not coloured? (1/2)

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc. 7 Exploring fractions Fractions name equal parts of a Whole. A unit fraction names one of the part. Fractions can name more than one equal parts of a whole. For example: What part is coloured blue? 2 of 3 equal parts are blue. 2/3 are blue. We read the fraction as two-thirds.

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc. 8 Something to remember!! The top number of a fraction tells how many parts are shaded. The bottom number tells how many equal parts. The fraction names parts of a whole. Fractions can name more than one equal parts of a whole.
