Ayoke Island Marine Protected Area Sitio Ayoke, Brgy General Island, Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

Geographical Location Para el MAR 2011  Cantilan is located in the northeastern part of Mindanao; bounded on the north by the Pacific Ocean; located on 9° 11’ - 9° 26’ latitudes and 125° 39’ - 126° 04’ longitudes.  Ayoke MPA will be reach in 45 min to 1 hr by boat.

Benefits /Impacts Benefits:  Easy to catch fish compared before (FGD)  Presence of scad is most observed in front of ayoke island (FGD) Impacts:  Coral cover and fish abundance increases from , but decline in (fig. 1&2) by FISH Project  Increasing awareness building, institutionalization of the CRM Program in the LGU  Decrease in violations from 13 infringement in 2005 to 2 in 2010 (FGD & police blotters) Awards / Grants:  Special Access Fund from Fish Project – Establishment of Guardhouse  Due to the good implementation from the previous project a Solar Panel Light was awarded to Ayoke Residents – (71 households)  Gill net from BFAR – Caraga Para el MAR 2011

Issues and Concerns / Threats 1.Intrusion of compressor fishing with cyanide from neighboring barangay and municipalities especially during northeast monsoon 2.Siltation from unsustainable forest, upland and agricultural areas including mining 3.Encroachment of commercial fishing within the municipal water 4.Occasional encroachment to the MPAs by fishers from neighboring LGUs 5.Access to guardhouse during northeast monsoon Para el MAR 2011
