Health and Food

Why we need Food To give us energy To make new body cells To fight infection and to protect us from disease

Eating Habits What we eat affects our health. You need to eat the right foods to maintain a healthy diet. Many people have their favourite foods, however, some may not be as good for you as others.

How to keep a balanced diet Eat plenty of: Butter, Cheese and Milk c Fats Meat, Fish and Beans c Proteins Bread, Potatoes and Pasta c Carbohydrates Fruit and Vegetables c Vitamins and Minerals

The Food Groups Each of those food groups have essential ingredients, which help maintain a healthy diet. You should not eat too much or too less of a certain food.

Fats Eating too much fat can damage your health! Fats are full of energy, and only very active people can burn this kind of energy off. If too much fat is consumed, it is stored in the body under our skin and around our heart. This extra fat can make a person overweight or even obese.

Sugar and Salt Sugar gives us lots of energy, however, can also be bad for our teeth. Consuming too much sugar can also contribute to high blood pressure. Salt is in most of the food that we eat and is mainly found in vegetables, meat, cereals and fruit.

Exercise As well as eating a balanced diet, it is important to do regular exercise. Exercising also: Reduces your risk of getting heart disease. Helps you to lose weight. Helps the immune system fight infection and disease.

QUIZ: Can you name the food groups? Fats Carbohydrates Proteins Vitamins
