Water Quantity and Quality

Of all the substances that are on necessary to life as we know it on Earth, water is by far the most important, the most familiar, and the most wonderful; yet people know very little about it. -Thomson King

Goal To understand the importance of adequate quantities of quality water to meet the needs of modern societies.

Importance of Water All life processes demand it Ancient civilizations fought over it and collapsed without it. Too much brings floods. Too little brings drought and famine. Carrier of other substances. Never used only cycled.

Where is Water Found? Oceans Surface of Land (Lakes, Rivers, Swamps) Ground Water Glaciers/Icebergs Air (Clouds/Humidity)

Water is always changing

How do you use water? To Drink/Food Wash Hands Take a Shower Wash Clothes Flush the Toilet Take a Bath Dishwasher Leaking Water

On average, how much water does a person use each day?

Do I really use that much?... Toilets – 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush (Leaks? 200g/d) Faucet – 2 gallons per minute Washing Machine – Up to 50 gallons per load Dishwasher – 20 gallons per cycle Shower – 4 gallons per minute

Want to check your numbers? Go to:

Where does all that water come from? Family of 4 on average could use 400 gallons each day... and this is indoor water use only, but where does it come from? Some houses are on well water, but most water now comes from the city.
