AP Language and Composition Mr. Josefino Rivera, Jr. AOSR September 8, 2010

Homework for Friday 1-2 page essay on “Nowhere Man.” Work on your personal museum.

Today’s Objectives Show knowledge of course and ask questions about it. Begin thinking critically about what it means to be rooted and rootless. Get to know one another. Learn the personal museum assignment – due next Tuesday, September 14.

Letters to Mr. Rivera I’m a pretty optimistic person and quite talkative. I apologize in advance for that. I’ve never really felt successful in school, but I’ve been comfortable at moments. Frustration on the other hand comes to me quite often. You might think I’m a bit pessimistic, but I’m trying to give an honest point of view. I’m guessing that most people are writing things that would just please you. My hope for this year is to maintain a 4.0, and worst fear, like any student, is coming to school in my underwear. I hail from Brooklyn, New York. I’m shy and timid yet confident. I hope for A’s this year and fear my parents’ wrath. I expect a cheap yet filling lunch every day from the school. My favorite class even taken is yet to be found. Something people around me would be surprised to know is that I spend a lot of time thinking. Sometimes I think about natural things, but sometimes I find myself analyzing the relationships between different objects in the world. I’m not a genius or specialize in anything. However, I am a constant worker who tries very hard.

Daily Journal Please put your homework on your desk for credit: materials and course info sheet. Get out a sheet of paper and answer ONE of the following questions. Please provide evidence and commentary to support your ideas. 1. What does it mean to be a “Nowhere Man”? 2. Is it better to be a “transit lounger” or rooted in a specific place? Why?

Listening Activity Read the listening behavior on the card but do NOT tell anyone what it says. Mingle around the room and summarize your response to your partner, while performing the listening behavior on the card. Make sure both people respond. Visit another person if time permits.

Debrief What behavior did you have? What did that feel like? What behavior did you encounter? What did it feel like to speak to someone with that behavior? How should you behave when speaking to a partner or a group? Pair share with your table partner your summary.

Participation Rubric

Speed Dating Introduce yourself. Shake hands. One of you shares ideas. The other listens. ▫Please make sure you explain your ideas so someone else understands why you think the way you do. Then switch. Be sure to listen! You will write a 1-2 page essay tonight and you may develop ideas you hear from your partners.

Speed Dating Questions To what extent do you agree/disagree with the following statements? 1. Being a “transit lounger” is better than being rooted in one country. 2.“Being part of no society means one is accountable to no one.” 3. Iyer’s tone is pessimistic.
