Changes to University Entrance for 2014

List of approved subjects The list of approved subjects will consist of subjects derived from the New Zealand Curriculum with achievement standards at Level 3. The list of approved subjects will be updated as subjects meet the criteria

Modified marking system for external assessment – Grade Score Marking GSM is being used for all standards at NCEA Level 1 assessed by written examination. GSM will not be used for standards assessed by portfolio, common assessment tasks or through verification Technology, Design and Visual Communication 2012 may be marked using GSM

UE Subjects status quo for UE subjects will remain for 2012 and 2013 MoE and NZQA are currently considering which “subjects” will be on the approved list from 2014; for 2015 entry This will involve consideration of what is appropriate for Technology, Sciences and Maths and Stats, and possibly some other areas; in the light of curriculum and NCEA alignment changes

Trades Academies partnerships between schools, tertiary providers and industry training organisations Trades academies provide 16 to 17 year olds with the opportunity to combine a secondary school programme with learning in tertiary education and/or industry settings

The trades Academies operating Tai Tokerau Trades Academy (Northland) Southern Cross Trades Academy (Auckland) Eastern Bay of Plenty Trades Academy (Whakatane) Waikato Trades Academy (Hamilton) New Zealand Primary Industries Trades Academy Primary Industries Trades Academy Wellington Trades Academy Canterbury Trades College (Christchurch)

At the end of May, 625 students were enrolled in the first eight Trades Academies. Planned roll increases and up to eight more academies mean student numbers could near 2000 in 2012 Initial reporting shows 91 per cent of students attended at least 80 per cent of their classes. Māori make up 36 per cent of students; Pasifika are just under five per cent. A quarter of students are girls

Senior secondary students enrolled in a trades academy programme can make a start on their trades career without paying fees and earn credits towards NCEA at the same time Students remain enrolled with their secondary school. This means they maintain their links with school, and can still take part in sporting and cultural activities
