Conjugation of Verbs

 This tense is happening now.  This is the base form of the verb either with or without an “s” depending on if it is plural or singular.  They hear a sound in the woods.  She hears a sound in the woods.

 This tense is still in the present, but it requires a “be” helping verb (such as “is”) and adding –ing to the verb.  Be verbs that can be in the present for:  am, is, are  She is singing today.  They are walking to the park.  I am working hard.

 This form is used when the action is in the past.  In regular verbs, the verb will require adding a –d or –ed at the end.  They walked to the park yesterday.  I worked hard yesterday.  However, not all verbs are regular verbs. Irregular verbs change in different ways.  She sang the song last year.

 The past participle has two parts.  First- there has to be a helping verb such as has, have, had, was, were, is, are, etc.  Second- the verb must be in the past form as previously discussed.  They have walked to the park every day.  I have worked hard all summer.  However, irregular verbs will change its form and still require a helping verb.  She has sung that song every year.

 Present- present participle – past- past participle  Walk(s)- is walking- walked- has walked  Work(s)- am working- worked- have worked  Talk(s)- are talking- talked- had talked  REMEMBER: the only way a verb can be in the PAST PARTICIPLE is if there is a HELPING VERB and the past form of the verb.

 Irregular verbs change forms in various ways.  Some change the vowel during conjugation.  Sing- is singing- sang- has sung  Some add an –n or –en to the past participle and change the spelling of the past.  Break- is breaking- broke- has broken  Some do not change at all.  Put- is putting- put- has put

 In order to know the correct form of irregular verbs, it is imperative to memorize each form.  REMEMBER: in order to use the past participle there MUST BE A HELPING VERB.  We see the children playing.  We saw the children playing.  We have seen the children playing.

 See-Saw- have seen  Eat-Ate- have eaten  Swim-swam- have swum  Go-went-have gone  Burst- burst- have burst  Write- wrote- have written  Break- broke- have broken  Drink-drank- have drunk  Drive- drove- have driven  There are many more to learn.
