First he had to build a huge army to win his country’s independence from a powerful king who had taken it over. Next he conquered many neighboring kingdoms. This lead to his taking over control of the salt and gold trades. Once his conquests were complete, Sundiata focused on improving farming through clearing new farmlands, introducing new crops, and even having soldiers work in the fields as they were finished fighting. These were the steps Sundiata took to turn Mali into a great empire.

Answer: In order to consolidate political and religious power Sundiata took power away from local leaders and took the title that they had borne, mansa, for himself. This was important to do so that these leaders could not rebel against him. By doing this he made himself even more powerful. 3. What religion did Mansa Musa follow (pg. 138)?Answer: Mansa Musa followed the religion of Islam.

Chapter 6 Study Guide, Section 2 4. (Short Answer) Describe two effects of Mansa Musa’s hajj (pg. 138). Answer: As a result of Mansa Musa’s hajj to Mecca two things happened. The first effect was that since Mansa Musa took nearly 100 camels loaded with 300 pounds of gold each (totaling 30,000 pounds of gold altogether!) and gave it all away in Egypt, for ten years following gold was no longer rare there. The second effect was that Mali became famous throughout Africa, Asia, and Europe due to Mansa Musa’s great impression upon the people he encountered during his hajj. These were the effects of Mansa Musa’s hajj.

5. (Short Answer) How did Mansa Musa spread his religion throughout Mali?Answer: Mansa Musa spread Islam through Mali in various ways. First he sent scholars to study in Morocco. Upon their return Mali, these scholars set up schools for studying the Qu’ran. Also, Mansa Musa made Arabic the main language for religious study, government, and trade. Finally, Mansa Musa hired architects from other Muslim countries to build mosques throughout his empire. These are the ways in which Mansa Musa spread Islam throughout Mali.

Chapter 6 Study Guide, Section 2 6. (Short Answer) What was the main cause for the decline of Mali and how did this lead to other causes? Mali declined for several reasons. Principally, the fall of Mali was due to the fact that the leadership after Mansa Musa was not as strong as he had been. This allowed for raiders to attack Mali, set fire to it’s schools and mosques, and take control of parts of it. Also, as the empire was so large, the weak leadership was not able to control it and parts of it broke away to form independent states. These are the reasons why Mali declined.
