Presentation transcript:

AP Language January 12-13, 2015 I can edit sentences for mistakes in mechanics, subject and verb agreement, and wordiness. I can analyze a writer’s use of metaphor in developing his purpose. I can identify a writer’s bias and evaluate its effect on his argument. I can apply my knowledge of syntactical devices and predict how aphorisms will be completed.

Underline words, letters, or numbers used as names for themselves, but use quotations for slang or technical terms. Ex. The word maybe is not part of her vocabulary. Rambling/Wordiness, Capitalization, Usage Elizabeth I was queen of England and she was completely bald at the age of 29 and she always wore a wig. Commas, Subject-Verb Agreement The first British theater known simply as The Theatre were built outside London in Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement, Capitalization, Commas, Usage, Title Everyone who knows their american history knows that Harriet Beecher Stowe whose the author of Uncle Tome’s Cabin had a lot to do with stirring up emotions that lead to the civil war. Wordiness, Title, Commas, Rambling With Auto Vision you can be able to watch The Simpsons while you’re also driving a vehicle, and the invention projects the TV picture onto a reflective windshield mirror so you can watch the TV image and the road concurrently at the same time.

Remember: Syntax and Persuasion Balance and Contrast  Antimetabole: a sentence strategy in which the arrangement of ideas in the second phrase or clause is a reversal of the first (using the same words); also called chiastic structure.  “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” –John F. Kennedy  Antithesis: a contrast of ideas or words in a balanced or parallel construction  “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” –Alexander Pope Repetition and Omission  Ellipsis: The deliberate omission of a word or words that are readily implied by the context  “To err is human; to forgive, [is] divine.” –Alexander Pope  Anaphora: The repetition of the beginning parts of phrases, clauses, or sentences.  Anadiplosis: the repetition of a prominent (usually final) word or phrase at the beginning of the next successive phrases.  “Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” –Yoda (This is also parallelism.)

Repetition  Epistrophe: the repetition of the same word or group of words at the ends of successive phrases or clauses.  “government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.” –Abraham Lincoln

Guess the Persuasive finish based on Syntax 8. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and. --Michael Jordan Antithesis: What is the opposite of failed? The completion will probably be 9.Adversity causes some men to break; --William Ward Epistrophe: The last word of the missing phrase will probably be Ellipsis: The second phrase will leave a word or words out. What is the most important word in the first section that might be implied in the second? The completion will probably be

I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed. –Michael Jordan Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records. –William A. Ward
