“Harrison Bergeron” Comparative Paragraph Thursday, April 24, 2014

Quick Write: Free Write Since we do not have school on Friday, you may do a free write in your composition notebook. You should write coherent thoughts in English for the entire 5 minutes.

Objective, Agenda, & HW Objective: Students will analyze the theme and mood of “The Lottery” and “Harrison Bergeron.” Agenda: ▫Quick Write ▫Return Mood Worksheets ▫Greek Roots ▫Comparison Paragraph Homework: ▫Study your Greek roots for final exams!

Mood Worksheets Please tape your mood worksheets into your composition notebook. ▫You should have one for “The Lottery” and one for “Harrison Bergeron.” ▫If you did not receive one, then you never turned it in! You may refer to these sheets as well as your stories to write your comparative paragraph. If you have questions about why some were wrong, please ask me before beginning your paragraph.

Greek Roots Using the word lists I gave you last week, look up the part of speech and definition of ONE WORD FOR EACH ROOT. Then, draw a visual. ▫Look up 1 word for morph. ▫Look up 1 word for schiz. ▫Look up 1 word for pseudo. If you were not here last week, then look at the power point for those days on my website to get the 3 new roots with their meanings and word lists. Quiz is Friday!

3 rd Formative Paragraph On the blue paper I give you, write 1 paragraph (which should have at least 8 sentences) to answer the prompt. You have the rest of the period to complete this paragraph. ▫You will turn it in at the end of class, even if it is not complete. Your grade will be based on completion, so focus on your work. Be sure to include textual evidence from both stories to support your answer. Write the page number in parentheses at the end of the quotation. ▫Example: “That night, I lay in bed trying to feel the right thing for our dead president. But the tears that came up from a deep source inside me were strictly for me” (6).
