1 Community: Defined Monday, March 31, 2014 Quick Write Speeches Defining Community

2 Quick Write: Free Write In your composition notebook, complete a free write. You need to write for the entire 5 minutes. If you are stuck, write about your spring break. Describe what you did. Explain how you felt about it.

3 Objective, Agenda, and Homework Objective: Students will define the 6 aspects of community and service as a preview to our unit on short stories and communities. Agenda: – Quick Write – Speeches – Defining “Community” Notes – Greek Roots (if time allows) Homework: Study your Greek roots and read a choice book.

4 Speeches First, we will finish speeches. Please be quiet and respectful during speeches. If you haven’t already checked, grades for speeches are in the grade book. The grades for the topic proposal letter, bibliography, and outline are yet to be entered.

5 Community and Service Work How do we live in relation to each other? How can I contribute to the community? How can I help others? How can the community (ies) in which we function affect the quality of our journey?

7 Communities are affected by: Crime Poverty Social Influences Peer pressure Drugs and violence Inhabitants Government and its spending Education Partnerships Economic upturns and downturns Environment Availability of resources And many other things…

8 So what does this mean to me as a member of a community? I am affected everyday by things that go on around me AND I can affect the things that go on around me I am influenced daily by the things that go on around me AND I can also influence things that go on around me I CAN be successful in my choices to better my surrounding community (ies)

12 How can I help others? Brainstorm some ideas about how you can, do, and will help others in your community or how others can, do, and will help you.

13 How will you… Develop community awareness and a sense of belonging and responsibility towards the community so you become engaged with and feel empowered to act in response to the needs of others. Discover the social reality of yourself, others, and communities Initiate involvement and service in the community in which you live Reflect on the needs of others and develop your ability to participate in and respond to these needs. Reflection and response BOTH contribute to the development of caring and responsible leaders. Explore the nature of past and present communities as well as your place in your own communities. Encourage responsible citizenship as you deepen your knowledge and understanding of the world around you.

15 Greek Roots Using the word lists I gave you last week, look up the part of speech and definition of ONE WORD FOR EACH ROOT. Then, draw a visual. – Look up 1 word for heir. – Look up 1 word for neo. – Look up 1 word for cosm. If you were not here last week, then look at the power point for those days on my website to get the 3 new roots with their meanings and word lists. Quiz is Friday!
