Unit 5 Week 2 Introducing Articles and Demonstrative Adjectives

Articles and Demonstrative Adjectives

DAY 1  An article is a kind of adjective. There are three articles: a, an, the.  A and an are indefinite articles because they refer to a noun in general. Use a before a noun that begins with a consonant. Use an before a noun that begins with a vowel. I saw a squirrel and an owl.  The is a definite article because it refers to a specific noun. The orange cat is a tabby.

Demonstrative Adjectives

DAY 2  This, that, these, and those are demonstrative adjectives. They point out people, places, things, or ideas.  This story is exciting.  These books are from the library.  Demonstrative adjectives can also take the place of nouns. When they do, they become demonstrative pronouns.  This is an exciting story.  These are library books.

Mechanics and Usage: Using Colons and Semicolons

DAY 2  Use a colon after the salutation in a business letter. To Whom It May Concern:  Use a colon to introduce a list of items. We grow four herbs: basil, parsley, mint, and cilantro.  Use a semicolon to join together two independent clauses – that is, two clauses that could be sentences on their own. The semicolon takes the place of a comma and a conjunction. Mom is the gardener; Dad is the cook.
