ROLLING RIVER SCHOOL DIVISION Education for Sustainable Development Update April 27, 2010

Overview  The RRSD continues to make slow but steady progress towards increased commitment to ESD  After sending 3 participants to the SEdA conference in 2009 (Trustee, Administrator and Principal), the SEdA team met with the Superintendents and reviewed the Vision developed.  The Division is planning to send a Divisional team comprised of 5 to 6 team members to SEdA in the Fall 2010  Superintendent and/ or Assistant Superintendent  High School Principal  Elementary Principal  2-3 Teachers

Work to date Governance  Discussion with Board about commitment to Sustainable Development as part of Policy and decision making processes  Need to develop a statement on Commitment to ESD – Target Fall 2010 (before Trustee Elections)  Proposal to re-align the Division supported School Pride Grant to support Sustainable Development initiatives that are tied to school pride by students Active search for green products

Work to Date Capacity Building  Have some staff that are passionate about ESD – Goal is to develop that passion in more staff and use their leadership in the Division.  Model and share the efforts of those staff that are passionate  What are they doing?  How are they doing it?

Work to Date Facilities – Operations  Active search for green products  Asking for enviro-friendly cleaning products in tender  Lighting retro fits  Water control faucets and urinals  Heating Control System upgrades  Minor capital projects that support energy conservation  Improved work order systems to better support planned travel (more efficient travel for Maintenance staff)  Divisional Correspondence via or internet  Online Leave Reporting  (First Class Conferences; online administration and Policy manuals; etc.)  Payroll and Accounts – Direct deposit Payroll and Accounts ; Electronic Pay and accounts vouchers(decreased printed accounts payable vouchers by 67%))  One of the first School Divisions in Manitoba to do Web ROE

Work to Date Curriculum - Learning  Area of least “deliberate planning” but have many positive projects happening  Paper Light schools (e.g.: e-newsletters; Divisional paper recycling project)  Global awareness projects (e.g.: 30 hour Famine – STARVE - CHANGE projects (support for third world (Ethiopian and Haitian) schools and children)  Water for All Project (commitment to remove plastic water bottles from the school)  UNESCO School designation –Onanole School  Cloth Bag project – eliminate use of plastic bags in school  Outdoor classroom project s  Composting projects  Peace Fair – Fight Against Racism and Discrimination  FISH (Friends Involved in Stopping Hunger) Project  Paperless Yearbooks  Compostable Consumables (paper plates, cups, cutlery project)

Future Plans –Governance  Plan to develop a statement on Board Commitment to ESD – Target Fall 2010 (before Trustee Elections)  Focus on ESD as a Division priority  Integration of ESD considerations into all relevant polices (5 year review cycle )  Book Study – The Sustainability Champions Guidebook

Future Plans –Capacity Building  Presentation on SEdA Conference and Manitoba Education focus on ESD to Rolling River Educational Leadership (RREAL)Team - Focus on understanding ESD (three legged stool) and the priority of ESD for MB Education.  RREAL Team Book Study – The Sustainability Champions Guidebook  Divisional “Educational” team to fall SEdA conference  Initiate development of Divisional ESD Team  Establish teacher leaders in ESD in all schools and provide PD to support  PD focus on Integrating ESD (not a stand alone topic) - SEdA Toolkit?  Model ESD integration / Infusion as we have done with integrating technology (BATL project) and assessment changes -encourage leadership through school administrators and identify school Based staff that have an interest / desire and support their leadership.

Future Plans Facilities - Operations  Process to review projects – purchases – procedures to consider ESD in operational decision (develop a checklist of consideration)  Policy Statement to support ESD considerations in decision making process

Future Plans Curriculum – Learning  Curriculum Exposure – Orient Teachers throughout the Division to Manitoba Education ESD policy  Create a greater understanding of ESD – More than going green and recycling (the three legged stool =Environmental – Economic – Social )  Grade Groups – dedicate past of the Grade / Subject Group meeting/ sessions per year to ESD – dialogue on integrating / infusing ESD in curriculum / lessons – don’t make it a “stand alone” topic.  Model ESD integration / Infusion as we have done with integrating technology (BATL project) and assessment changes -encourage leadership through school administrators and identify school based staff that have an interest / desire and support their leadership.  Focus on ESD as a Division curricular priority
