ANIMAL CHARACTERISTICS

Multicellular Sexual Reproduction (usually) Develop from an embryo

Animals contain specialized body parts a. Nerve fibers to control movement b. Gut to digest food Except for the Sponge!

Most animals can move (fly, swim, run, jump, etc.) Those that can’t move have other adaptations. All animals are consumers

Animal Classification 1.Vertebrate or Invertebrate? 2. Arrangement of body parts Radial symmetry Bilateral symmetry Asymmetrical

3. Common Characteristics: movement, shape, ancestors, cell make up, food source, body structures, etc.

Animal Behavior How an animal responds to its environment in order to survive.

ANIMAL BEHAVIORS 1.Innate behaviors – “instinct” *Not learned from others or experience. *Influenced by genes. 2. Learned behaviors – Learned from experience.

BEHAVIORS Survival behaviors FoodShelter DefenseFind mate Seasonal behaviors Migrate Hibernate Estivate

Communication Echo location Sounds – sing, noises Mark territory with chemicals Body language – spines, show teeth, pound chest, etc.
