Bellringer (15 min) You have just been assigned a study to critique its ethics. You must decide what, if any, ethical issues arise with each of these studies. One group member presents a one-minute argument to the class about your findings.

Today We will identify and explain some of Sigmund Freud’s famous theories, and look at how to uncover what people are secretly thinking with psychoanalysis

“I’d like to spank all teachers.” – President George W. Bush – THINK ABOUT WHY THIS MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED

Sigmund Freud: Father of the psychoanalytic perspective – How does his perspective explain behavior? Advocated for the use of cocaine as an antidepressant Came up with many theories that are still controversial today.

“I’d like to spank all teachers.” – President George W. Bush – PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVE?

Freudian Slip: A verbal mistake caused by unconscious thoughts – Deep down Bush really wants to punish teachers

For Example – 22 seconds 1.“Police are not there to create disorder, the police are there to preserve disorder” – UNCONSCIOUS THOUGHT? 2.“This country including Osama….I mean Obama…” – UNCONSCIOUS THOUGHT? 3.“I think we can expect unemployment to grow.” – UNCONSCIOUS THOUGHT?

Create your own Freudian Slip!

The Situation You’re in class and you’re hungry, tired and you have go to the bathroom…

Freud – 3 Parts of the Mind

Freudian Theory: 3 Parts of the Mind Id: unconscious instincts and desires – Based on the pleasure principle – EAT, SLEEP AND PEE RIIIGHT NOOOW! – NO THINKING – JUST DOING

Freudian Theory: 3 Parts of the Mind Superego: Morality, or sense of right and wrong. – Makes you feel guilty when you do something bad

Freudian Theory: 3 Parts of the Mind Ego: Balances the Id and the ego with reality – Based on the reality principle: – Sometimes being selfish and impulsive can hurt us in the long run – Sometimes we need to address our needs and forget our guilt – COMMON CONFUSION – EGO IS NOT “YOU”

The Situation ID: Stuff the food in your pocket into your face, go to the bathroom without asking and fall asleep in the hall. SUPEREGO: It is only right to wait until the end of class. We need to learn so we can succeed! EGO: Realistically, I can use one of my bathroom passes now and splash some water in my face in the bathroom to wake up. I’ll eat when I get home

GP - PRACTICE THE SITUATION: Your friend is eating a snack that you really like ID – PRINCIPLE? SUPEREGO EGO – PRINCIPLE?

GP - PRACTICE THE SITUATION: There’s an enormous bowl of free chocolate on the table in front of you ID – Principle? SUPEREGO EGO – Principle?

Independent Practice You want to text somebody in class – What would your ID say? – What principle is it based on? – What would your EGO say? – What principle is it based on? – What would your SUPEREGO say? The pizza is so good you want to eat the whole pie – What would your ID say? – What would your EGO say? – What would your SUPEREGO say?
