3  Life May 6 1856- September 23 1939  Austrian Neurologist o Father of psychoanalysis  Believed in Free Association  Dream Analysis  Looked deeply into the human psyche o Psyche: the mental or psychological structure of a person, especially as a motive force.

4  Present from birth  Entirely unconscious— instinctive and primitive  Childlike  Driven by pleasure principle o Strives for immediate gratification  If this is not satisfied immediately anxiety or tension sets in.  Example: Infant will cry until needs are met  If the Id’s needs were always met society would be chaos.

5  Part of a person’s personality that deals with reality.  Develops from the Id o Develops to help the Id express needs in an acceptable manner  Both in conscious and unconscious mind  Works on reality principle o Weighs costs and benefits of acting on impulses  Works to delay gratification o It will allow the behavior to happen but only in the appropriate place

7  The superego acts to perfect and civilize our behavior.  It works to suppress all unacceptable urges of the id and struggles to make the ego act upon set standards rather that upon realistic principles.  The superego is present in the conscious and unconscious.  According to Freud, the key to a healthy personality is a balance between the id, the ego, and the superego.
