WMO Space Programme Dr Donald E. Hinsman Director WMO Space Programme World Meteorological Organization

Outline Status of the WWW’s space-based component GOS International Geostationary Laboratory (IGeoLab) Integrated Global Data Dissemination Service (IGDDS) Training in the WMO Virtual Laboratory (VL) Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS)

WMO space-based sub-system of the WWW’s Global Observing System (2006) Unparalleled international cooperation has been achieved in satellite activities

Status of the WWW’s space-based component GOS Standing members operational satellite operators Newest members NASA – Aqua, Terra, NPP, TRMM, QuickScat JAXA – GCOM series ESA – ERS 1 and 2, ENVISAT FSA –METEOR 3M N1 (R&D inst), OKEAN series CNES – Jason-1, SPOT-5 IMD – INSAT series Republic of Korea – COMS-1 CNSA – HY-1A, HY-1B Possible future members

IGeoLab Goal is international partnering on instrument, S/C, launch, and test /evaluation of possible future Geo orbit capabilities Concept of an International Geostationary Laboratory (IGeoLab) supported by CGMS in May 04 Two test proposals to demonstrate the benefits and viability of the concept (1) demonstration of the GIFTS instrument at several geographical locations (2) development and exploitation of a sub-mm sounding instrument in geo orbit

Increased real-time access to satellite data IGDDS : satellite data & products circulation scheme  to meet the needs of WMO Programmes for improved access  as agreed in WMO Space Programme Implementation Plan IGDDS Baseline –Integrates all satellite-related data fluxes –Global exchange of satellite data among regional centres –Dissemination relying on ADM and Direct Broadcast ADM mainly via Digital Video Broadcast by telecom satellite cost-efficient for end-users and for operators –Fully integrated within the WMO Information System (WIS)

IGDDS regional/global concept Data from operational Polar and Geostationary satellites available within region A Data Collection and Products Centre Other data : R&D, high-level products Region A Inter-regional Data Exchange Region B Data from operational Polar and Geostationary satellites available within region B Other data : R&D, high-level products Data Collection and Products Centre Data Dissemination User Community #1 User Community #2 ADM #1ADM #2 Other distribution means Data Dissemination User Community #1 User Community #2 ADM #1ADM #2 Other distribution means

ADMs by satellite operators Europe : EumetCast-Ku band (Eumetsat) Africa and Caribbean: EumetCast-C band(Eumetsat) Central & South-America : –pilot EumetCast-C band (Eumetsat) for 3 years –considerations for a transition to a NOAA ADM service by 2008 covering North-, Central, South-America and Pacific islands Asia-Pacific regions : –current Shinetek ADM over China –trial planned in 2006 for wide Asia-Pacific ADM including DVB-S broadcast and terrestrial links IGDDS - WMO existing system as a core component of GEONetCast

Virtual Laboratory for Education and Training in Satellite Meteorology WMO and operators of operational meteorological satellites have formed the Virtual Laboratory for Training in Satellite Meteorology Virtual Laboratory - collaborative effort joining the major satellite operators across the globe with WMO “Centres of Excellence” in satellite meteorology “Centres of Excellence” serve as the satellite-focused training resource for WMO Members - Five WMO Regional Meteorological Training Centres, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology Training Centre and Oman - Five satellite operators are NOAA/NESDIS, EUMETSAT, China’s NSMC, IMD and JMA

EUMETSAT NESDIS Niamey Niger Nanjing China San Jose Costa Rica Collaboration is the key to success Melbourne Australia Narobi Kenya Bridgetown Barbados JMA NSMC Virtual Laboratory December, 2000 Oman IMD Buenos Aires Argentina

High Profile Training Event (HPTE) October 2006 : simultaneous training period involving all WMO Regions All CoE involved in classroom training and/or interactive on- line lectures 4 key on-line lectures provided globally (scheduled twice to account for time differences, and translated) Inter-regional on-line discussion on a “live” situation with image/product interpretation A Project Plan endorsed by WMO and CGMS  Demonstration of VL efficiency and relevance at global scale  Fostering cooperation at global and regional level (focus groups)  Training opportunity for all WMO Regions

Exciting times for WMO Members Space-based component of the GOS continues to expand Provides valuable satellite data, products and services more so than ever before in the history of the World Weather Watch WMO Space Programme Implementation Activities IGEOLAB, IGDDS, HPTE, GSICS, GEOSS
