6 trait writing can be explained using the metaphor of an ice cream sundae Focus/ (Paragraphs) (Focus on topic)

Focus/Ideas Strong main idea sentence Strong details that support our main idea Strong conclusion that reinforces main idea Stay ON TOPIC Know purpose for writing

Organization/Paragraphs Logical Order-Beginning, Middle, End Use time order words (first, next, then) Use transition words (for example, in addition, however)

Voice Choose a voice that matches audience and purpose for writing Use vivid adjectives to give strong details Use interesting language to involve readers Put yourself and your feelings into your writing

Word Choice –video lesson–video lesson Use exact nouns, strong verbs, and vivid adjectives to make writing lively Appeal to the senses Use figurative language Don’t be too wordy

Sentences Use different ways to start sentences – Use nouns, adverbs, adjectives, pronouns, prepositional phrases, etc.. Vary kinds and length of sentences – Use questions, exclamations, and statements Connect short, choppy sentences with conjunctions (and, but, although, because)

Conventions Remember CAPS Capitalize all proper nouns and adjectives as well as first word in sentence Agreement-make sure subjects and verbs agree Punctuation-make sure there is an end mark for each sentence and other punctuation marks are used correctly (commas) Spelling-use a dictionary Use proofreading marks
