Notes on Character “The Parsley Garden”

Character Presentation What do we learn about a character and how do we learn it? There are two types of character presentation: Direct Presentation: Description: What is said about a character by the author/narrator or by other characters.

Character Presentation (con’t) 2) Indirect Presentation: 2) Action: What the character does 3) Reaction: What the character says/thinks/does in response to the actions of others 4) Dialogue: Can include what the character says or what others say to or about him/her 5) Thoughts: Usually limited to the thoughts of the character (not what others think of him/her) *Note: Indirect Presentation requires the reader to make an inference as to the qualities of the character’s personality.

Other Character Terms Protagonist- main character who undergoes CONFLICT in an attempt to achieve a GOAL Example? Antagonist- main character or force that opposes the protagonist (attempting to prevent him/her from achieving his/her goal)

Hero – main character who possesses heroic qualities ( Hero – main character who possesses heroic qualities (* a protagonist is not always a hero) Example? Antihero- villain; main character who opposes the hero (*cannot exist without a hero) Round- a well-developed character; complex; has several sides to his/her nature. Flat- character who appears to only have one side

Dynamic- Character who changes throughout the course of the story (significant change) Example? Static- Character who does not change in the story Stock (Stereotype)- Character who is familiar in fiction

Foil- a character who represents the opposite of another character in the story, usually the protagonist, but who has something significant in common with the character he/she opposes. (Ex: Two Brothers- the good and the evil) Dilemma- a difficult situation that a character (usually the protagonist) faces in which either choice that the character makes will lead to negative consequences
