Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW) Network Economics 4 Eckhard SzimbaETISPlus Road Data Workshop ETISplus: Road networks, impedances & link load data Scope of the road network model: Comprising network and freight terminals Purpose of the road network model: modelling passenger and freight transport demand in Europe, i.e. computation of transport impedances, assignment, external impacts Basis : TRANS-TOOLS version 2 network model ETISplus road network model: General items

Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW) Network Economics 5 Eckhard SzimbaETISPlus Road Data Workshop ETISplus: Road networks, impedances & link load data Unique ID Nodes (f-node, t-node) (Maximum) speed for passenger cars/ trucks Road type Number of lanes per direction ETISplus road network model: Main link attributes

Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW) Network Economics 6 Eckhard SzimbaETISPlus Road Data Workshop ETISplus: Road networks, impedances & link load data Road charges (generic toll versus link-specific toll) Average fuel costs, considering country-specific fleet characteristics Information on ferry connections Information on country border crossing Traffic count data, differentiation by vehicle type ETISplus road network model: Main link attributes [continued]

Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW) Network Economics 11 Eckhard SzimbaETISPlus Road Data Workshop ETISplus: Road networks, impedances & link load data Inland freight terminals Unique ID Name Country and NUTS-3 region the terminal is located in Connectivity with other modes Working hours per day Working days per week Services per week Main terminal attributes

Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW) Network Economics 12 Eckhard SzimbaETISPlus Road Data Workshop ETISplus: Road networks, impedances & link load data For modelling purposes, data mainly required at the level of O/D relations ( NUTS-3  NUTS-3 regions) Main impedance data: travel time; travel distance; user costs (fuel costs, road charges) ‘Observed data’ rarely available: => computation of impedance data under application of models Road impedance data – general items

Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW) Network Economics 13 Eckhard SzimbaETISPlus Road Data Workshop ETISplus: Road networks, impedances & link load data Two types of demand data: Demand at the level of O/D relations Demand at the level of network links Demand at the level of O/D relations: to be estimated, since almost no observed data available Demand at the level of network links: partly collected, partly modelled Road demand data

Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW) Network Economics 14 Eckhard SzimbaETISPlus Road Data Workshop ETISplus: Road networks, impedances & link load data Network topology: TRANS-TOOLS vs. UN/ ECE Availability of UN/ ECE road traffic count data Road link load data – traffic count data UN/ ECE

Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW) Network Economics 19 Eckhard SzimbaETISPlus Road Data Workshop ETISplus: Road networks, impedances & link load data Data on long-distance coach services Mapping of most relevant scheduled long-distance coach services Demand at the level of O/D relations, based on level-of-service data Data on fares per country

Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW) Network Economics 20 Eckhard SzimbaETISPlus Road Data Workshop ETISplus: Road networks, impedances & link load data Conclusions Very few ‘observed’ data are available at the level of O/D relations (demand, supply) => requirement to model data The use of manifold different road network models for different purposes, such as Network model A, used for modelling within TRANS-TOOLS; Network model B, used for collecting infrastructure-related data for TEN-Tec; Network model C, used for collecting traffic count data by UN/ ECE, Network model D, used for collecting traffic count data in country D, … imposes relevant efficiency restrictions for transport modellers

Institute for Economic Policy Research (IWW) Network Economics 21 Eckhard SzimbaETISPlus Road Data Workshop ETISplus: Road networks, impedances & link load data Conclusions [continued] Several of the data gaps within TRANS-TOOLS will be bridged by ETISplus ETISplus will clearly enhance the technical capabilities of TRANS- TOOLS, e.g. in terms of Extension of the geographical scope of data availability Enhanced status of quality of network model (topology, attributes, link alignment) Inclusion of freight terminals Enhanced status of level-of-service and demand data for long-distance coach transport Refinement of traffic count data
