Computers in Urban Planning Computational aids – implementation of mathematical models, statistical analyses Data handling & intelligent maps – GIS (Geographic Information Systems); display and communications devices; production of maps and charts Computer aided design including visualization tools

ROLE OF GIS IN IMPROVING THE FLEXIBILITY AND RELIABILITY OF URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT Based on a paper presented at the 2001 CUPUM Conference by Ata M. Khan and Jennifer M. Armstrong

Planning and Management Requirements Planning, Design and Implementation System Operations & Management Infrastructure Management: Maintenance/Rehabilitation

The Components of GIS-T Technology. Hardware. Software Data Capture Data Integration Users & Their Requirements Institutions

ENHANCED FLEXIBILITY & RELIABILITY Selected Tasks that can be assisted: - Executive Information Systems - Multimodal Transportation Planning (e.g. demand forecasting) - System Management - Environmental Impacts - Etc.

Urban Transportation Planning in a GIS Environment Geocoded Land Use Data Geocoded Travel Survey Data Transportation Networks & Attributes in GIS Format Travel Analysis Energy Consumption, GHG Emissions, Air Quality Etc.

Urban Transportation Planning in a GIS Environment Land Use Data (Geocoded) Transportation System Network (Geocoded) Geocoded Travel Survey Data Travel Analysis Assigned Link Volumes, Capacity & LOS, Link Avg. Speed Energy Consumption & GHG Emissions, Air Quality Economic Factors Evaluation, Choice & Implementation

Example of Flexibility Enhancement: NOx Emissions (Kg/Km) -PM Peak Hr.

Example of Reliability Enhancement in Transportation Planning National Capital Region (Canada) network Task: to estimate intra-zonal trip lengths O-D survey records geocoded using TransCAD Use of shortest path algorithm within TransCAD -- Macro written to Calculate trip lengths

Typical TransCAD Road Network with Geocoded O-D

Example of Reliability Enhancement in Transportation Planning (Cont.) GIS Approach: 376,000 Veh-Km/day of intra-zonal travel. Conventional Factor Approach: 340,000 Veh-Km/day. Difference: 10.6% Also, the Factor Approach consistently tends to underestimate trip lengths.

CONCLUSIONS Improved flexibility of Urban Transportation Planning, Operations & Management. Enhanced accuracy of analytical procedures and results. Maximum use of geocoded data. Executive Information Systems -- for efficient project/program approval process.
