DO NOW 8th Grade – Wed 9/2/15 Re-read lines 1509-1514 on p. 302: In your notebooks, what word do the playwrights use to explain how Mr. Frank and Mr. Kraler should look? What should this description signal to the audience?

INDEPENDENT WORK 8th – 9/8 Independent Work: Re-read lines 1752-1773 on p. 306. On loose leaf, answer the following questions: What does bolt mean in this context? What does this word suggest about Mr. Dussel? Mr. and Mrs. van Daan murmur their welcome. What do they playwrights mean when they use this word? Peter is humiliated by his father’s comments to Mr. Dussel. Why do the playwrights use this word instead of upset or embarrassed? Exit Ticket (also on looseleaf): What was Mauthausen?

INDEPENDENT WORK 8th – 9/9 “The Diary of Anne Frank, Act I” (Scenes 3,4) Hyperbole is a form of figurative language in which one uses exaggeration to reinforce a point. Re-read lines 907-917. Find an example of hyperbole in these lines. Who says it? About whom does it refer? What does it reveal about that character? Playwrights often use dialogue to show contrasts in characters. Re-read lines 2040-2066. Contrast the ways Mr. Dussel and Mrs. Frank communicate with Anne. What does this dialogue reveal about both characters? Although most of the play is written in English, in lines 2151-2168 are in German. Why do the playwrights have Mr. and Mrs. Frank speak German in this part of the script?
