2. Analyzing Drama - Act 1 – Scene 1
drama - or play, is a form of literature meant to be performed by actors for an audience
playwright – author of a play
script – the text of a play
cast of characters – a list of all the characters in the play
stage direction – instructions that give readers, actors, the director, and the stage crew important details that explain what is happening
setting – the time and place of the action

3. structure of a literary work – the way in which it is organized or arranged
act – a major section in a play
scenes – smaller sections of an act

4. Act 1 - Scene 2
The audience gets to know and understand the characters through the descriptions of their physical appearance.
dialogue the written conversation between two or more characters.
The format of the dialogue: the name of the character is given, followed by the words that he or she speaks
The author draws contrast by identifying the differences in two or more subjects
symbol – a person, place, or an object that stands for something beyond itself.

5. Act 1 - Scene 3
hyperbole - figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated for emphasis or humorous effect
Exchanges between characters can reveal or reinforce a reader’s ideas about them.
denotation - literal or dictionary meaning of a word
connotation -  a meaning that is implied by a word apart from the thing which it describes explicitly.
- words carry cultural and emotional associations or
meanings in addition to their literal meanings or
denotations.
idiom – an expression that has a different meaning from the meaning of its individual words
- example: It costs an arm and a leg. = It’s expensive.

6. Act 1 - Scene 4 pun – a humorous play on words
- some puns involve using different meanings of the same
word
- examples: Santa’s helpers are known as subordinate
analogy – a comparison between two things that are alike in some way.
- example: Just as a sword is the weapon of a warrior, a pen is the weapon of a writer.

7. Act Two – Scene 1, 2, 3
chronological order – the order in which the events occur
character traits – different qualities of a character as revealed through dialogue
tone - the attitude he or she express towards a subject or another character
irony – a special kind of contrast between appearance and reality
situational irony – a playwright contrasts what readers or characters expect with what actually exist or happens
dramatic irony – the reader or audience knows something that a character does not
