A BOOK BINDING TECHNIQUE

MATERIALS NEEDED Stiff cardboard with neat edges Contact paper (also known as shelf paper) color or clear Box cutter Pencil Scissors Cloth tape Ruler 2 pieces of plain paper Stapler Glue Book Cover illustration

MATERIALS NEEDED PHOTO PART 2

PROCEDURE Take a piece of stiff cardboard, a pencil, a ruler, and your book. Measure ½” larger than your book all around the edges.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Use a pencil to mark the lines all around the edges to prepare to cut.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Use a box cutter to neatly cut away unused cardboard. NOTE: Adult help is needed for this. Repeat this to make two.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Take two pieces of paper, your book, and a stapler. Staple the papers to the front and back of your book. These are fly pages and are used to protect your book.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Place the newly cut cardboard side by side. Leave a space in the middle just a little wider than your book.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Link the two pieces of cardboard with cloth tape. Do three rows overlapping the tape to give it strength. Do this on both sides.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Measure and cut out contact paper. Leave space around the edges.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Peel off back carefully. A friend or adult help may be needed to keep the sticky backing from sticking on you or bunching up.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Place the connected cardboard onto the peeled contact paper as evenly and carefully as possible.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Use scissors to triangular shapes off of each corner. This will help make it easier to fold over.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Carefully fold the edges into the middle.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Place the book in between the taped cardboard. Measure and cut out contact paper to cover the inside front and back of your book. NOTE: Leave enough overlap to cover the staples on your book.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Have a friend or adult help you to hold the book down as you put contact paper inside the book. Do this for the front and back of the book. Don’t forget to cover the staples.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED Fold the book closed. Glue the cover picture onto the front of the book.

PROCEDURE COMPLETE You are done. Share your book with others.
