This power point is over how to read a map and the different Themes of Geography. Maps

Vocabulary Map- a visual description of a place, using legends, and scales. Map Scales- used to measure the distance between places. Legend- each map has symbols, the legend is where the symbols are explained: a stick figure, representing people. Title- displays the purpose for the map: United States map/ Texas Map. Latitude- (Horizontal) gives the location of a place on earth either north or south of the Equator. Longitude- (Vertical) gives a point that is east or west of the Meridian.

Continents and Oceans The Earth consists of 7 Continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.Which one do you live on? The Earth consists of 5 Oceanic regions: Arctic, Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Southern. Which ones are America surrounded by?

Don’t look at your notes, can you name all the Continents and Oceans?

Absolute and Relative Location Absolute Location is the exact location of a place using latitude and longitude coordinates. ( Galveston is 29 degrees south of Houston). Relative Location means to locate a place on a map, by comparing its relationship to another place or city. (Schlitterbhan is located on Galveston Island, just 47 miles south of Houston).

5 Themes of Geography Location- “Where are we?” Can be Relative or Absolute. Place- “What kind of Place is this?”What do you think of places like China or Africa? Human Environment/ Interaction- How do the people adapt to their society? Movement- The movement of people shapes our world. Westward Expansion, Slavery. Region- Focuses on how the government is run, and what is acceptable and what is not.
