OPENING STATEMENT This class was a blessing in disguise I never thought I would learn so much about myself through a class. Before taking this class I knew I always wanted to hold a leadership position in life but I never really knew what that exactly meant. I now know that I want to be a servant leader because before I even knew of the model I was already living the life of one. Now that I learned about my strengths and what a servant leader really is. I plan on making servant leadership apart of my life and I and building on my strengths in order to be the leader I have always aspired to be.

SECTION 1 SELF LEADERSHIP Student will express a personal code of leadership / membership ethics I n order to be a leader I feel you should know yourself first, I believe that if you do not understand and are able to help yourself you are not capable to help others. A leader is someone who can set positive examples for others, someone you can look up to. A leader is someone who cares about every single person’s well being and not themselves or a select group. A leader is someone who is willing to make changes if it benefits everyone and is open to new ideas. A leader to me is not scared to stand up for what they believe in. My outlook on leadership is based on my role model in life the guy who I feel is an exceptional leader, which is my father figure I strive to be as great a leader as he is in life.

SECTION 2 Leadership Theory and Models Student will show knowledge of the “Servant Leadership” theory of leadership by Green The servant leadership model basically says you must be a servant before you lead. You need to find yourself know how to help yourself, be the servant by looking up to someone who was once a servant and following their example so that one day you can be the leader people are looking up to. The servant leadership model is broken up into three major components which are the servant, the leader and both together. Each of the components have characteristics that define them, under the servant component is listening, empathy and healing. Under the leader component is awareness, persuasion, conceptualization and foresight. Under both together is stewardship, commitment to the growth of people and building community. Once you obtain all of these characteristics you will be a servant leader and many people have these traits within, they just need to build on them and make sure everything they do is for the good of others and not just themselves.

SECTION 3 SELF LEADERSHIP As a leader sometimes you need to put your problem aside and think of the bigger picture, what is going on in my community in which I can help make a difference or help brighten someone’s day. I strongly value community service and I always have, Since I was younger I was always trying to help do anything and everything and as I got older I started volunteering in community clean ups and helping serve food at the Boys & Girls club of Rhode Island. I also did speeches in events the Boys & Girls club hosted. In high school I always volunteered to help sell tickets to events or help set up. Since I have been in college I have donated to many fundraisers, I walked in the breast cancer walk and ran in the nearly naked mile. I value community service because if I was not able to help people I would feel as though I am a useless body walking the earth.

SECTION 4 (Interpersonal and Organizational Concepts and Skills ) In order to be an active listener you must pay close attention to the speaker and try and avoid any distractions. An active listener makes gestures to ensure the speaker that they are actually listening for example reiterating what the speaker said to get a better understanding. Being an active listener will help build relationships with the people around me which can benefit me a lot as a leader. People should be able to come up to me and be assured that what they are saying is actually being taken into consideration. When you are an active listener people will feel comfortable approaching you and as a leader you want that connection with people.

SECTION 5 (Interpersonal and Organizational Concepts and Skills ) During the fall semester of my freshman year I joined the P.I.N.K 101 process in order to become apart of the organization P.I.N.K Women. A major component of the process was to do a group community service project. After receiving the assignment I came up with the idea to do a forum on contraception and woman’s issues and my group loved the idea. My job in the project was to set up the meeting times and agenda for the forum. One of my strengths is responsibility so in order to stay on tack I made an attendance and made sure everyone was able to attend each meeting that I set up with health services in order to make sure we knew enough information to hold the forum. I also set up meetings to prepare for the event in which my one of my other top strengths came in to action which is restorative because if there were any conflicts I tried my best to make sure it got fixed and did not interfere with our event and in the end it was a complete success.
