Folk History ★ Folk music has no nameable origin. Early folk music was passed by word of mouth. ★ Music of the working class and very community focused. It rarely enjoys commercial success. ★ The 20th century brought folk back; in the 1930s folk music experienced a boost and in the 1940s bluegrass began to evolve. ★ In the 1960s folk artist like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchelle wrote songs of war, work, and offered a powerful promise for change in their music. ★ in 1970s folk faded back in and in the 1980s folk singers like Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, and Michelle Shocked emerged after the opening of fast folk cafe.

Folk King: Woody Guthrie ★ Woody Guthrie was born July 14, 1912 in Okemah, Oklahoma and died October 3, 1967 in New York City. ★ He was a singer-songwriter and folk musician whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, children songs, ballads, and improvised works. ★ Many of his songs are about his experiences in the Dust Bowl eras during the great depression. ★ Many of his recorded songs are archived in the Library of Congress.

Folk Queen: Joan Baez ★ Joan Baez was born on January 9th, 1941, is an American folk singer and a songwriter who is of mixed Mexican and Scottish descent. ★ She was an instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occasions and being jailed for her beliefs. ★ She is considered the “Queen of Folk” for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. ★ Over fifty years after she first began singing publicly in 1958, Joan Baez continues to tour, demonstrate in favor of human rights and nonviolence, and release albums for a world of devoted fans.

Folk Prince: Will Oldham ★ Will Oldham was born January 15, 1970 in Louisville, Kentucky and is better know and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. ★ He is and actor and one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters, mostly known for his sad, tragic songs. ★ At the age of 20 he decided he was going to leave acting and drop out of Brown University after only one semester and after returning home became determined to learn the guitar and write music. ★ His career began in 1993 when he began performing and recording under variations of the Palace name including Palace Brothers, Palace Songs, and Palace Music.

Folk Princess: Joni Mitchell ★ Roberta Joan Anderson was born November 7, 1943 in Ft. Macleod, Canada. ★ She is a musician, singer, songwriter and painter whose genres include folk rock, folk jazz, and jazz pop. ★ In early mid-1960s she became an established folk artist as well as a voice for social change. ★ She has received 8 Grammy Awards, Billboard Century Award, and Awarded the polar music prize. ★ She helped establish the west coast branch of Amnesty International, a human rights organization.
