3 Born May 24, 1941 Real name was Robert Allen Zimmerman Born in Minnesota Grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Russia Formed a couple of bands in high school Very influenced by blues artists

4 Also influenced by folk singer Woody Guthrie Dropped out of college in 1960 and moved to NYC to be with Guthrie who was in the hospital Became a regular in the clubs and coffehouses of Greenwich Village Met a lot of musicians and song writers

5 Released self-titled Bob Dylan in 1962 Mostly covers Only two original songs Released two other albums soon after The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan The Times They Are A- Changin’

6 Became firmly associated with the 60’s “protest movement.” Wrote songs about civil rights and nuclear weapons Walked out of the Ed Sullivan show when he wasn’t allowed to perform a particular song

7 Later in his career he shifted to more pop music Used electric guitar more and stepped away from folk music Had a bad motorcycle crash that changed his feelings about working

12 Late 1960’s began a style known as Psychedelic Rock Tried to create fusion of free from jazz with elements of Indian classical music. A rather strange sound Banned on many radio stations – believed to advocate recreational drug use.
