Presidential Election Campaign Biographies, Core Collection, A Guide to Using the Microfiche Collection Compiled by Julienne Crawford, July 2002, for the Presidential Studies program at UALR. This guide was produced as part of an internship project of the Graduate Program in Public History at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

What is in the collection? 197 titles on 597 fiche. Includes literature about specific elections, parties and candidates, including winners and losers of presidential election campaigns. Often literature is about a candidate’s entire career. Secondary sources usually date from the candidates lifetime or soon after. Primary sources include speeches, letters, papers and works of candidates.

Where is the collection? Presidential Election Campaign Biographies microfiche and index are located in the Media Center on the 3 rd Floor of the Ottenheimer Library at UALR.

What does the citation in the index mean?

Where are the microfiche? Microfiche are located in metal drawer cases along the outside wall of the Media Center. They are organized in alphabetical order by series title and in numerical order by microfiche number. Place a red File Out Card in the place where microfiche is removed.

How do you view a microfiche? After finding the right microfiche in the metal drawers, take it to a microfiche reader. If you do not know how to use the machines, ask one of the Media Center staff to help you.

Parts to the Microfiche Reader

How to Operate a Microfiche Reader Turn on reader with switch on right side of reader. Pull glass plate tray under lens forward until upper glass separates from lower glass. Remove microfiche from paper sleeve and place in tray between two pieces of glass. Push tray back under lens.

Focusing Focus by turning the tan wheel Zoom by turning the blue wheel

Searching Microfiche Search by moving plate Backwards/forward = vertical Left/right = horizontal Rotate Image with knob on front of reader. Print by pressing the green button on the front of reader. Change light to dark for viewing and printing with button on front.

Finished with microfiche… When finished, pull tray out to remove microfiche. Replace microfiche in paper sleeve. Push tray back under lens and turn off reader. Place sleeved microfiche in return box on top of metal drawers. DO NOT place in drawer.
