REINVIGORATE ARTS EDUCATION

The Importance of the Arts  Promotes intellectual and personal growth  Equips the student to cope with change  Liberates students from limitations  Instills values

Budget Repair Bill  State Budget  Almost 1 billion cut from MPS school system  The art, foreign language, music, and physical education programs will be cut  Teachers are forced to teach multiple subjects

Empower the Arts We propose that Wisconsin Lutheran College hosts a workshop for the Arts, inviting MPS high school students to revive their passion of music, art, and theatre.

The Event Basics  Who:  MPS high school students involved or interested in music, theatre, and art, along with their parents.  WLC faculty and students within these departments.  What:  Empower the Arts: A workshop event celebrating the Arts.

The Event Basics  Where:  WLC Fine Arts Building and REX  When:  Fall 2011 (October)  Why:  A way to revive and empower the love of the Arts, in response to the loss of art programs in Milwaukee Public Schools.  A recruiting and informational opportunity for WLC.  A way for our campus to give back to Liberal Arts Education.

Schedule of Events  Arrival and registration: 9:30am  Students receive folder of information  Informed of signup sheets  Place their artwork on display  Speaker Dr. Gregory Schulz: 10am  Lunch provided by Sodexo: 11am  Performances by WLC choirs, band, and string ensemble  Guests can view the student art displayed, which was brought for the event

Schedule of Events  Break into individual departments: 12:30pm  Students are able to interact with professors and students in their desired program.  Learn how they can participate in programs outside their schools.  Tours of Fine Arts Building: 1:30pm  Music, Art, and Theatre wings

Schedule of Events  Theatre workshop: 3-5pm  Acting Your Song  Exploring Subtext  Silent Subtext  The Actor's Bag of Tricks (explores various techniques)  Stage Makeup (old age or animal or some other)  Theatre Games for Expanding Imagination  Walk into Character  Costume to Character

Schedule of Events  Art Workshop: 3-5pm  Explore new mediums  Hands-on creation  Speak with art majors  Learn new techniques  View college exhibits  Discuss favorite artists and inspirations

Schedule of Events  Music workshop: 3-5pm  Speak with music majors  Learn about the music lab  Talk about private lessons  Sing along with WLC choir students  Discuss favorite music artists, groups, and ensembles

Benefits of the Workshop  Empowering high school students  Despite the budget cuts, they still have options to continue their passions.  Reminding them of the important skills they learn from the Arts, which will benefit them in their lives, not to mention their college search  Connecting high school students with college role models.

Benefits to WLC  Recruitment for Arts education programs, as well as the school in general  A way to give back to the MPS School Systems, as a Christian Liberal Arts College  Opportunity for WLC students to give back to their community and use their talents to empower younger students  Exposure for WLC in the community, especially MPS high schools

Budget  Expected to be the same cost as any College Visit Day hosted by the Admissions Dept.  Possible expenses:  Food  Printed materials  Advertising  Art supplies used
